As part of its brutal and unlawful aggression against Ukraine, Russia has already captured more territory this year than Kiev managed to liberate during last year's counteroffensive, the Washington Post reported on Friday.

According to the Washington Post, from June to December last year, Ukrainian forces recaptured 515 square kilometers of the country's territory, while Russian forces took over an area of 761 square kilometers in the offensive conducted since the beginning of April this year.

As the American daily emphasized, Russia moved forward, attacking many points along the 966-kilometer front line in Ukrainewhile Ukrainian forces were waiting for reinforcements and weapons.

In recent days, the Russian offensive in the Kharkiv Oblast in northeastern Ukraine has forced thousands of people to leave their homes. Some evacuees say this year's attack was even more violent than last year's. Russian forces also captured areas further south.

According to analysts, although Russian territorial gains are relatively small, they are important because they put pressure on the Ukrainian army over a large area.

Russia's offensive means that Kiev will have to move forces to different places, especially to the north, said Gian Gentile, a historian from the American think tank Rand Corporation. According to him, this may make it more difficult for Ukrainian forces to prepare a counteroffensive.
