The pro-Kremlin and Western-sanctioned entrepreneur Yevgeny Prigozhin is still trying to use the role of his mercenary formation Wagner Group in the battles for Soledar, according to the American Institute for War Studies. Experts comment on the video published by Prigozhin and taken – according to him – in the occupied Ukrainian city of Soledar.

Emphasizing the role of mercenaries from the Wagner Group in the battles for Soledar in the Donetsk region, Yevgeny Prigozhin wants to “raise his political rank and indirectly criticize the regular Russian army” – assess analysts from the Institute of War Studies (ISW).

In this way, they comment on the video that Prigozhin published on Saturday, according to him, filmed in Soledar. It shows the commander who, according to Prigozhin, led the capture of the city. ISW experts assess the film as part of his efforts to strengthen the role of the Wagner Group, as well as his personal role in the war in Ukraine.

“Ukrainian forces probably do not hold their positions in Soledar, despite the Ukrainian side’s claims of January 14,” analysts estimate. They indicate that the reports on the situation in the towns around Sołedar are also contradictory. The Ukrainian general staff claims that Ukrainian forces repelled attacks on the towns of Sil, Rozdolivka and Krasna Hora. The Russians claim that they have seized the railway station in Sil and almost completely occupied Krasna Hora.

Formerly the Ministry of Defence Russia, officially informing about the “capture” of Sołedar (these reports were denied by the Ukrainian army), omitted the Wagner Group. In a statement, the ministry said that “taking control of this city became possible thanks to the constant destruction of the enemy by assault fire and military aviation, missile forces and artillery.”

After the criticism of Prigozhin, as well as the negative reaction of pro-war Russian bloggers, the ministry Sergey Shoigu published another statement, where the mercenary formation was mentioned.
