One person was hospitalized after the houseboat she was sailing hit the embankment of the Tałcki Canal in Masuria, the Masurian Volunteer Rescue Service reported on Sunday. According to the findings of the services, the accident was caused by the helmsman of the motorboat, which created a large wave. The police said that the perpetrator could be held responsible for the trespass consisting in disobeying the ban on the production of waves, but also for causing the accident if the injured person’s injuries turn out to be serious.

A dangerous event took place on Sunday evening on the Tałcki Canal, near Lake Tałtowisko in the Giżycko district in Masuria.

– The motorboat wanted to enter the canal faster and created a very large wave, which pushed the houseboat. It hit the wharf, damaged the hull plating and began to take on water – informed the duty rescuer of the Masurian Volunteer Rescue Service Marek Banaszkiewicz.

He added that one person from the houseboat crew suffered a spinal injury. She was taken by water ambulance to the hospital.

The police and fire brigade from Ryn and Giżycko worked at the scene of the incident. MOPR took care of pumping water from the houseboat and towing it to the nearest port to bring it ashore.

Senior aspirant Iwona Chruścińska from the Giżycko police reported that the perpetrator of the incident has not yet been determined. She reminded that if it is considered a collision, the motorboat’s helmsman will be liable for failure to comply with the sign prohibiting the generation of waves, i.e. a misdemeanor. It can also be responsible for causing an accident if the victim’s injuries are serious.
