The Grot-Roweckiego Bridge is the most crowded crossing in the capital. This year’s traffic volume measurements show that for the first time in summer there were more vehicles than in spring. The reason is probably the easing of restrictions after the third wave of the pandemic. Road workers also see the effects of opening a new crossing along the Warsaw Southern Bypass. Thanks to it, fewer drivers choose the Siekierkowski bridge.
The Municipal Roads Authority conducts traffic volume measurements on eight crossings in the capital city. Only the new bridge along the Warsaw Southern Bypass was not included in the study. In spring, the average daily traffic volume on all bridges was 605,504 vehicles, while in summer 625,195 vehicles. “Thus, 3.1 percent more cars traveled from one bank to the other side of Warsaw during the summer holidays than before the start of the summer,” say road workers.
As they emphasize, for the first time in the history of measurements, more cars crossed the Vistula in summer than in spring. Road workers explain this by loosening the restrictions introduced due to the pandemic. “After the winter, every month more and more workplaces decided to limit or end remote or hybrid (rotational) work and return to stationary work” – they note. And this translated into an increase in traffic congestion.
Due to the pandemic, the research was not conducted in 2020 as it would be unreliable. The differences between summer and spring have so far always shown increased traffic in spring. In 2019, the drops were significant – two years ago, traffic decreased by 5.2 percent. (from 672,711 vehicles in spring to 639,422 in summer), three years ago it decreased by 6.8%. (from 667,244 vehicles in spring to 624,536 vehicles in summer), and four years ago it fell by 8.3%. (from 645,074 vehicles in spring to 595,410 in summer).
This time, the number of cars on Warsaw’s streets increased only in the summer months, slowly approaching the pre-pandemic level. This is confirmed by the measurements of the traffic intensity on the bridges compared to the previous ones. In the summer of 2019, almost 640,000 people traveled through the crossings every day. vehicles, in summer 2018 – nearly 625 thousand, and in summer 2017 – over 595 thousand.

However, not all bridges have experienced increased traffic. Out of two, the number of vehicles decreased in the summer compared to the spring. It decreased the most on the Siekierkowski Bridge, by almost 15,000. Road workers explain that the reason for this decline is the opening of the South Bridge, thanks to which residents will get from Wawer to Wilanów faster, and soon they will also reach the S2 junction with the S8 route and the A2 motorway via the tunnel in Ursynów. There were also fewer vehicles on the Śląsko-Dąbrowski bridge – their number decreased by 2.2 thousand.
The Grota-Roweckiego bridge has been the most frequently chosen route by drivers for years. In 2021, 194,365 (spring) and 205,354 vehicles (summer) drove it. In 2019, it was 204,849 and 206,487 vehicles, respectively, and in 2018 – 196,995 and 198,084 vehicles.
The second most frequently used crossing for transport was the Łazienkowski Bridge. The daily traffic was at the level of 115,944 (spring) and 121,739 (summer) vehicles, compared to 128,194 and 122,643 in 2019 and 133,412 and 118,766 in 2018.
