Officials from Mokotów cut down a few cherries that grew on Wiśniowa Street. They explain that the trees had to be cut down because of their condition. Some of them got sick, some died. A spokeswoman for the district office assures that new cherries will be planted in their place, but of a more durable type.

The City is Ours informed about the felling of trees on Twitter. “Another senseless felling of trees in recent weeks” – the activists wrote and called out the greenery coordinator of the city hall, Magdalena Młochowska. Our reporter was there and counted six trunks. The trees were cut in a specific way, over a meter high, because they were protected from the parking drivers by a metal shield.

At the Mokotów District Office we asked about the reason for the felling. – These cherries were a short-lived variety. They have reached their age. Some of them died and some got sick. Those who are sick stand only because they are supported by these metal shields – explains tvnwarszawa.pl Aleksandra Grabarczuk, spokeswoman for the Mokotów District Office. It ensures that new trees will be planted in place of the trees that have been cut down. – These will be cherries in the Kanzan variety, with a longer lifespan. They will perform better in road conditions.

They recognized that they “threat the safety of people and property”

Officials from Mokotów submitted an application for felling on July 11, 2022. They asked the Marshal of the Mazowieckie Voivodeship for permission. – We cannot make decisions on our own, and as a district office we operate within the framework of the capital city of Warsaw. Therefore, in this case, we did not apply to the mayor of Warsaw, but to another institution – the Office of the Marshal of the Mazowieckie Voivodeship – explains Grabarczuk. The application cited “poor phytosanitary status” as the reason for removing the trees.

The decision of the marshal’s office was received on September 13, 2022. In the justification, we can read that a committee inspection of the trees was carried out. One of them was found to be dead and the others sick or dying. Words appear in the documents: caries, cankers, cavities, fungal pathogens. When describing most cherries, it was also written that they “grow into the metal casing” (the one that was supposed to protect them) and “threat the safety of people and property”. No birds’ nests were observed.

The marshal gave the green light to felling 10 trees in Wiśniowa and obliged the office to perform replacement plantings. As we hear in the office, they are planned for autumn 2023.
