Before the war, there was a Cristal cinema there. She found herself on the edge of the ghetto and witnessed fierce uprising fights. After the war, Leopold Tyrmand placed the Słodycz bar there in his novel “Zły”. The renovation of a historic tenement house at the corner of Żelazna and Krochmalna is underway. The work is scheduled to be completed next year.

According to the city hall, renovation of the city tenement house at ul. Żelazna 64 began at the end of last year, with the renovation of the façade facing the yard. The rustication (decorations that liven up the façade) on the ground floor and the cornice were then recreated.

In May this year, the works moved to the building's facades: the southern facade (from the square side) with the gate passage and the western facade (from Żelazna Street). The first task was to clean the facade of secondary plasters or remains of incorrect repairs. The team then applied new plaster.

The missing decorative fragments of the facade decoration are recreated in the attic of the tenement house. “The models are preserved, original elements and archival photographs, mainly of cornices and decorative knobs. The detail is made using a traditional method in plaster on a metal structure. The finished parts are placed on the façade,” the city hall reported.

Currently, the installation of cornices between the ground floor and the first floor as well as the first and second floors is in progress. New supports are also being installed to enable the reconstruction of the balconies.

The renovation of the tenement house is being carried out by ZGN Wola under the supervision of the Office of the Capital Conservator of Monuments, and the works are scheduled to be completed in late autumn 2025.

This is where the Słodycz bar operated in “Zły”

The construction of Anna Koźmińska's tenement house at the corner of Żelazna and Krochmalna Streets began in the last years of the 19th century and was completed in 1912. Józef Napoleon Czerwiński's design assumed the construction of a metropolitan, decorated tenement house with rustication, decorative cornices, balcony balustrades and a semi-circular finial on the roof.

In the interwar period, there was a Cristal cinema on the ground floor, which later changed its name to Acron. In 1940, the tenement house was on the edge of the ghetto, whose boundaries ran along ul. Żelazna.

During the Warsaw Uprising, this area was the site of intense insurgent fighting. After the war, the building appears in the novel “Zły” by Leopold Tyrmand. It was here that the famous 4th category Słodycz bar, belonging to Warszawskie Zakłady Gastronomiczne, operated.
