Road workers summarized the weekend exercises in the tunnel of the Southern Bypass of Warsaw. The scenario assumed a car fire, a collision and several people injured.

“Attention, attention! Fire alarm, please leave the tunnel” – this was the message that rang out in the tunnel near Ursynów on Saturday evening. The exercise scenario assumed that cameras detected a fire in a passenger car, passengers fled in panic, running into the middle of the road, and there were collisions. As a result of sudden braking, subsequent cars drove into each other, causing a collision. Dozens of people were injured.

By law, such exercises must be held here regularly every four years. The participants include: the State Fire Service, the Police, the Emergency Medical Service, the Air Ambulance Service, the Road Transport Inspection, the services of the Masovian Voivode, the City of Warsaw and the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways.

The exercises are mainly about improving the coordination of activities between all services and checking the notification systems.

“The exercises also help in organizing emergency medical assistance points for injured people even more efficiently, triaging them in terms of injuries and ultimately directing them to specialized medical facilities,” explains the Warsaw branch of the General Directorate for Roads and Motorways in a statement.

Messages for drivers

Variable message boards warn drivers about difficulties on the S2 route. If the tunnel was blocked, drivers will see information about detours, not only in the immediate vicinity, but also several dozen kilometers earlier – on A2, S8, S7, S17, DK79 and DK92, before the intersections with DK50.

If necessary, drivers in the tunnel will hear announcements from the Tunnel Management Center broadcast through loudspeakers, as well as via the radio in the car – on one of the four public radio programs (92.4 MHz and 102.4 MHz – Jedynka, 99.1 MHz – Trójka or 104.9 MHz – Two).

If a road accident occurs and one of the tunnel lines is blocked, the entrance to it will be closed. First, the traffic lights in front of the tunnel will turn red, then the barrier will close and the closure message will appear on the signs.

Evacuation and alarms

There are 19 alarm niches located in the outer walls of both tunnels, approximately every 125 meters. In turn, in the internal walls there are nine niches, each every 250 meters, with emergency passages to the adjacent nave. At each of the niches, on the tunnel wall, there are signs informing about their “equipment”. Each has an emergency telephone, a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket, and there are also hydrants in the evacuation passages on both sides.

Road workers also explain that when using the emergency communication system, we do not have to specify where we are. This will be visible on computer screens in the Tunnel Management Center, as will activating the manual fire alarm (a small red box on the wall at the entrance to the alcove) or removing the fire extinguisher from the cabinet.

Cameras are watching

The situation in each of the 2,335 meters of the tunnel is constantly monitored by 134 cameras, of which 22 are high-speed cameras. The Capital Police Headquarters and the Capital City Security Center also have access to monitoring. Warsaw. It works in the tunnel sectional speed measurement.

The system should automatically detect dangerous events, e.g. the appearance of a pedestrian in a tunnel, stopping a vehicle or driving against traffic.
