Employees who were burned during an explosion at the construction site of the depot in Annopol have returned to work – said the spokesman for Tramwaje Warszawskie. One of the men was seriously injured, doctors from Siemianowice Śląskie had to transplant his skin.

To a gas explosion in a sewage canal it happened at the end of October last year. Employees of one of the subcontractors building the tram depot in Annopol performed welding work. At one point there was an explosion, as a result of which three workers were burned, one very seriously.

– The gentlemen have already returned to work – Maciej Dutkiewicz, spokesman for Tramwaje Warszawskie, told us on Wednesday. – One of the injured was treated in a hospital in Siemianowice Śląskie. He had very severe burns and a skin transplant was necessary, he added.

The prosecutor’s office is investigating the explosion, and no charges have been brought against anyone yet. – It was not an explosion of gas from the network, the cause was probably the pouring of chemicals into the sewage system – explained the tram spokesman, stating that determining the cause is the task of investigators.

The outbreak and the schedule

The unfortunate event also made it difficult to carry out investments. – We had a construction site closed for several weeks due to police activities in the area. It was an accident that resulted in serious consequences for three employees. A few weeks ago we had a local visit to the prosecutor’s office. The activities had a direct impact on the schedule because the contractor could not carry out the works, said Michał Olszewski, vice-president of Warsaw. He added that with such complex investments, one postponement may result in further delays, affecting the work schedule.

– The explosion closed the area from work for several days, so we were unable to complete some work at the entrance to the depot when the weather was good. A dozen or so days turned into long weeks – confirmed Maciej Dutkiewicz. – Of course, work continued in the depot itself – he added.

A necessary investment

The Annopol depot is a huge investment. The complex of 12 buildings and several kilometers of tracks covers an area of almost 12 hectares. It will be a stopping place for over 150 trams and work for over 430 people. A parking, repair and technical service hall was built. There will also be warehouses, car washes and an administration building.

Construction began in 2022. It is scheduled to be completed in April 2024. The construction cost is approximately PLN 670 million gross (PLN 15 million more than initially reported). The investment was necessary due to the construction of the line to Wilanów and the planned route to Gocław. Warsaw recently bought 123 trams from the Korean Hyundai Rotem factory. The entire rolling stock can hardly fit in the four existing depots (two of them were built before the war!).
