Warsaw Gdansk. Crowd before going down the escalators, footbridges empty. Project questions

After each train arrives at the Gdański Station, passengers spill out, who get stuck a moment later, wanting to leave the platform. The crowd on the narrow escalators will get even denser when the redevelopment of the cross-city line starts in full swing. As the expert notes, the problems could have been avoided if the railway workers had not slimmed down the project years ago.

The modernization of Warszawa Gdańska took several years and cost PLN 63 million. The comfort of travelers has improved, but there are issues that raise concerns. The greatest doubts are caused by the connectors of the platforms with the underground passage. In the central part of each of the three platforms there is a pavilion with escalators – one goes up, the other down. Not very wide.

Once the train arrives, a bottleneck quickly sets in as almost all passengers head for the escalators. Without the queue, only those who get out of the train first will benefit. The rest has to stand its own, in the worst case even a few minutes. The biggest crowd is when two trains enter the platform at the same time. Or when the stairs are broken. Then the way in the other direction is also troublesome, it is difficult to get to the platform through the dense crowd of those who just want to leave it.

It is true that arriving passengers have alternatives in the form of ordinary stairs to the footbridges over the tracks at both ends of the platform, but it is a longer trip, for which those rushing to work or school apparently do not have the desire and time. Anyway, most people go to the subway or trams to Słomińskiego, so the underground passage is the shortest way, a natural choice. You can clearly see that something has gone wrong: on the narrow stairs, foot to foot, and the monstrous structures of the footbridges rarely feel a human foot.

Expert: there was supposed to be a second thread of the tunnel

Witold Urbanowicz from the transport-publiczny.pl portal has no doubts that the station could have been designed better. – In the original concepts, it was assumed that there would be four platforms, with two descents on each. Then, due to savings, the scope of the project was limited, first reducing the number of platforms to three, then going down to one per platform. The plan called for a second tunnel to run parallel to the existing tunnel under the tracks. Then pedestrian traffic would be distributed completely differently, some passengers would choose a parallel lane. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. However, there are two footbridges that hardly anyone uses. There was no imagination, no empathy for the passenger – comments Urbanowicz.

The expert notes that the situation was further aggravated by the choice of escalators, which – although they have advantages, for example, they are convenient for passengers with large luggage – significantly reduce capacity. – The problem of congestion will intensify with the increasing number of connections – notes Witold Urbanowicz. And it should be remembered that the planned reconstruction of the cross-city line in the central section will increase traffic at the Gdański Railway Station.

Railway workers: two footbridges were built

We ask why the railwaymen did not decide to build more exits from the platforms. In response, the spokesman for PKP PLK sends you to the footbridges. – As part of the investment in Warszawa Gdańska, in addition to the reconstruction of entrances from the underground passage to the platforms, two new footbridges were built, thanks to which passengers can conveniently leave the station towards the city and other means of public transport. The facilities are equipped with lifts and thus ensure full accessibility to all travelers, including those with limited mobility – replies Karol Jakubowski.

When asked why the passages are so narrow, the PKP PLK spokesperson replies that the width was not changed during the implementation of the investment. There remains the question of the choice of escalators and their limited capacity. – The escalators enable efficient ascent and descent to all station platforms Warsaw Gdansk. In addition, footbridges facilitate communication – informs Jakubowski. And he mentions that PLK performed maintenance of the escalators on Gdańska Street before the March timetable correction.
