Warsaw. “Grzegorz Rosiński in illustrations” exhibition at the Palace of Culture

On June 15, the retrospective exhibition “Grzegorz Rosiński in illustrations” will begin at the Palace of Culture and Science. Comic book covers, drawings, sketches and graphics by the artist will be presented. – Rosiński is a comic book classic, admired throughout Europe – encourage the organizers.

– From June 15, on the fourth floor of the Palace of Culture and Science – in the Skłodowska Hall, you will be able to see a cross-sectional exhibition of the works of Grzegorz Rosiński – a painter, graphic artist and illustrator who changed the face of comics in Poland and throughout Europe. This is the largest retrospective exhibition in Poland dedicated to this outstanding creator, said Paweł Płoski, director of the Museum of Caricature. – It is already a comic book classic, admired and loved throughout Europe – he emphasized.

Grzegorz Rosiński was born on August 3, 1941 in Stalowa Wola. In 1967 he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 1969, he published the comic book “Tamara's Diadem”, part of the “Captain Żbik” series. In 1977, he debuted with the comic book series “Thorgal”. It was a French-language comic book series created jointly by the Belgian screenwriter Jean Van Hamme and Rosiński, published in installments on in the pages of the Belgian magazine “Le Journal de Tintin”, and later, from 1980 – in individual comic book issues (volumes).

16 million copies sold

In Poland, “Thorgal” debuted in 1978 in the “Relax” magazine. So far, approximately 16 million copies have been sold, 41 volumes (69 with side series) in several languages. The series was created until 2018.

– Rosiński painted the covers of “Thorgali” in oil and in a large format. We will also present them at the exhibition, alongside drawings, sketches and graphics. There will also be book illustrations, boards from the “Captain Żbik” series, drawings from historical comics and graphic stories created in exile in Belgium: “Thorgal”, “Szninkiel”, “Yans”, “Western” and “Zemsta Hrabiego Skarbek” – he pointed out Płoski.

They will show Rosiński's first drawings and sketches

During the “Grzegorz Rosiński in illustrations” exhibition, over 400 artifacts will be presented.

– His oldest comic drawings come from school and scout magazines. We will also show drawings from “Captain Żbik”, as well as cover designs for children's books, and sketches from the years of studies at the Academy of Fine Arts – he added.

Płoski emphasized that visitors will be able to see a cross-section of Rosiński's work, including numerous little-known works. – These exhibits, i.e. Rosiński the Unknown, are probably the most surprising, because most people associate him with comics, especially Thorgal – he explained.

“Some people consider him a technical genius”

The director of the Museum of Caricature recalled that Rosiński masterfully mastered various painting and graphic techniques adapted to the themes and used them with great freedom like a virtuoso. – Some even consider him a technical genius – said Płoski.

The curator of the exhibition “Grzegorz Rosiński in illustrations” is Piotr Rosiński. The author of the exhibition script is Maria Lengren. The author of the texts in the catalog is the translator of Rosiński's comics, Wojciech Birek.

– The idea of ​​the exhibition was born at the EC1 Center for Comics and Interactive Narration in Łódź, where it was presented at the turn of 2023 and 2024. The Warsaw edition of the exhibition is organized by the Museum of Caricature. Eryk Lipiński – emphasized the spokeswoman of the Museum of Caricature, Katarzyna Miękus. – The presentation of Rosiński's achievements is possible thanks to the cooperation of the local governments of Warsaw and Łódź – she added.

The exhibition “Grzegorz Rosiński in illustrations” will be open until September 8.
