Road workers are working on the streets of the capital during the summer holidays. This year, in July and August, a total of 60 investments and renovations are being carried out. These are both smaller and larger projects. Some of them have already been completed, others are ongoing.
Warsaw, which is inhabited by about two million people, empties out a bit during the holidays. There are fewer cars on the streets, and there are fewer passengers on buses, trams and the metro.
– That is why there is no better time than the middle of the holidays to carry out work or introduce major changes. However, we know that renovations cannot be carried out without difficulties – for which we apologize to the residents of Warsaw – says Łukasz Puchalski, director of the Municipal Roads Authority, quoted in the road workers' press release.
Holiday renovations
During this summer, road workers have already carried out many works related to the maintenance and reconstruction of roads. “Among them, of course, there was no shortage of milling. This is the fastest method to improve the condition of the road surface. New asphalt appeared, among others, on Ordona Street (the section between Wolska and Kasprzaka Streets – along with the renovation of the sidewalk), Marszałkowska Street and Bankowy Square (the western carriageway on the section from Królewska Street to “Solidarności” Avenue), Na Rozdrożu Square and many others” – they list.
Roads are not only carriageways, but also pavements, cycle paths, greenery. On Koszykowa Street, unnecessary concrete was broken up, and new vegetation appeared in its place. Road workers also completed work on the construction of a linear park along Rudnickiego, Perzyńskiego and Podczaszyńskiego streets, which were rebuilt last year. They also built the missing section of the cycle route along Warszawska Street in Ursus.
It's supposed to be safer
Road safety is also important. That is why new traffic lights have been installed on Rembielińska Street. During the summer, ZDM also continues work on replacing lighting fixtures. Since the second half of June, over four thousand new SAVA LED fixtures have appeared on the streets of the capital.
More road works
Work is already underway to replace the expansion joints on the Poniatowski Bridge viaduct and on the Gdański Bridge. Work is also underway on Broniewskiego, Odyniec and Zamoyskiego streets, where a new road surface will soon appear. Construction of new roundabouts is also starting – at the intersection of Krasińskiego and Przasnyska streets, and Augustówka and Zawodzie. A new sidewalk will be built on Świerszcza Street.
ZDM is also trying to remove concrete and asphalt in places where there is too much of it – further stripping of concrete is underway – at the intersection of Mazowiecka Street with Kredytowa Street and Traugutta Street, on “Solidarności” Avenue (behind the Independence Museum) and Saska Street – between Brazilian and Zwycięzców Streets.
By the end of the summer holidays, more traffic lights will also be installed – on Maczka Street in the area of Niedzielskiego “Żywiciela” Street and at the intersection of Branickiego and Sarmacka Streets.
Investments in the New Center of Warsaw also do not have a summer break. The transformation of part of Plac Defilad into Plac Centralny is underway, work is underway on Mazowiecka Street, which will be two-way after reconstruction. Similarly, at the intersection of Wisłostrada and Karowa Street, where a new pedestrian crossing is being built, connecting the street with a pedestrian and bicycle bridge.
Planned reconstructions
Road workers will start other tasks during these holidays. Among others, the next stages of milling Czerniakowska Street have already been planned. Your reconstruction of Krakowskie Przedmieście and paving – on Filtrowa Street and Wilson Square. Work on two large projects will also start any day now. One of them is the reconstruction of the Złota/Zgoda quarter.
– On August 16, we plan to introduce a contractor for the reconstruction of the Złota/Zgoda quarter. He will start with demolition works, focusing first on Złota Street. Zgoda Street will still be passable – due to the need to complete the reconstruction of Chmielna Street – announces Łukasz Puchalski.
The start of work in this part of the City Centre will be associated with several changes in the area, such as a parking ban. However, it will not apply to residents with a subscription to the Paid Unguarded Parking Zone. Road workers have left an appropriate number of parking spaces for such people.
When will SPPN be held in Saska Kępa?
Remaining on the subject of SPPN, the second major project concerns its extension, namely the introduction of the zone in Kamionek and Saska Kępa. Work in Praga will begin in mid-August, and the zone itself will be launched November 2nd. Subscription applications can be submitted one month before the zone is activated.
New parking meters will appear in Kamionek and Saska Kępa – with new functions: QR code reader, NFC support, the possibility of extending parking time or support for BLIK payments. Such parking meters will also be installed in other Warsaw paid parking zones – as many as 1,900 devices will be gradually replaced.
