A leopard gecko was found in one of the apartments in a housing estate in Wilanów. The city guard’s eco-patrol was called to the scene and took the reptile to the zoo.

City guards received a report from the security of one of the buildings on Sarmacka Street about a small reptile found there. “He had large, dark eyes, slightly swarthy skin with dark spots and a long tail,” the guards describe. Upon arrival, it turned out that the beautiful lizard, several centimeters long, was a leopard gecko.

According to a security guard, the animal was found in his apartment by one of the tenants, who caught the gecko and handed it over to security. “The tenant had already left the house, so the guards did not manage to find out how the reptile could have gotten into the apartment. Although slightly hypothermic, the gecko was in good condition and had no injuries,” the guards said.

Ekopatrol transported the gecko to the CITES center at the Warsaw Zoo, where specialists will take care of it.

It will survive without food for up to several months

The leopard gecko is the most popular gecko bred at home. In nature, they live in rainforests, mountains and deserts – these reptiles masterfully adapt to the weather conditions of the areas they inhabit.

The Latin name Eublepharis macularius means “spotted with true eyelids”. The leopard gecko has movable eyelids. It has claws on its fingers instead of gripping pins, so it cannot climb on smooth surfaces, but it can dig and climb stones very well.

The gecko’s body is covered with tiny scales, with slightly larger, convex ones protruding from them. The most common color is brown and brown with small spots on a gray-yellow or cream background. A gecko’s tail is about half the length of its body. In a stressful situation, the animal may reject it. The tail grows back.

The leopard gecko feeds mainly on insects and small vertebrates. It stores fat and water in the tail. A well-nourished individual can survive without food for several months without any damage.
