The holiday period was marked by renovations for the capital's schools. These were successfully completed in nearly 150 facilities. We checked the scope of the work and how much it cost.
As Monika Beuth, spokeswoman for the Warsaw City Hall, told us, renovation works were carried out in nearly 150 educational units.
What was renovated and how much did it cost?
– Most of them started immediately after the end of the school year and were carried out during the holidays. The renovations carried out in educational facilities covered a wide range of works, and their implementation resulted primarily from the recommendations of periodic building inspections carried out in each facility based on construction law or decisions of supervisory bodies – Beuth told us, noting that she meant the recommendations of the fire department or the sanitary inspection. Some facilities also needed renovation to maintain them in the proper technical condition.
As Beuth listed, the following works were carried out in particular: interior finishing, including plaster repairs, painting, renovation of sanitary facilities, replacement of floors and flooring, renovation of catering blocks, renovation of gymnasiums, playgrounds and sports facilities: playing fields, running tracks, sanitary installation works: renovation of water and sewage installations, central heating installations, or renovation of heating substations; electrical and telecommunications installation works; works related to thermal modernisation: insulation and replacement of roof covering, replacement of windows, insulation of facades; infrastructure renovations: pavements, external stairs, fences, area lighting; renovations adapting facilities to current fire protection regulations: alarm installations, reconstruction of communication routes, installation of doors with appropriate insulation; renovations ensuring accessibility for people with disabilities: platforms, ramps, sanitary facilities.
We also learned that the city budget for 2024 earmarked a total of over PLN 100,000 for the renovation of schools and educational facilities. 120 million zlotys.

As the spokeswoman admitted, renovation works are still being carried out at several municipal educational institutions throughout Warsaw. They mainly concern, for example, renovation of external building stairs, local replacement of central heating installations, renovation of the gym, roof covering, catering blocks or renovation of the facade with building insulation.
– Directors and contractors have established a schedule so that the renovation work is as inconvenient as possible for students and all other users of educational facilities. Appropriate measures are being taken to minimize the impact of the work on the organization of the school year, including abandoning work during the day and performing it after classes and on weekends, Beuth assured.
The spokeswoman also concluded that the district education departments did not provide information that renovations started during the summer holidays were the reason for, for example, transferring children to another facility.
