The findings of the investigation showed that in November 2016 Gretchen P., his mother, lived with him in Żoliborz. On March 31, 2020, all contacts between Gretchen P. and her friends stopped. Posts suggestive of activity were posted on her social media accounts, but they differed in style from before. On April 4, 2020, an entry appeared on Facebook that the woman was to stay in the USA. She was dead at that time.

As the District Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw previously reported, Karl P. killed his mother on the night of March 31 to April 1, 2020, suffocating her with a pillow. “Then he purchased tools – a hand saw, repair tape, painting foil and a metal fence mesh. The suspect dismembered his mother’s body in an apartment in Warsaw’s Żoliborz district. Then he wrapped its parts with a fence net. Mazowiecki,” the prosecutor’s office reported.

According to investigators, after the murder, Karl P. used his mother’s payment cards and bank accounts, and left Poland in October 2020. The perpetrator was supposed to confide in a family member about what he had done. “The proceedings were initiated by information about the death of Gretchen P. obtained in the course of the search case. The services received information that Karl P. had murdered his mother,” the prosecutor’s office said.

Brought from the USA, the trial took place in Poland

On May 21, 2021, Karl P. was detained in the United States and handed over to Polish law enforcement.

The trial started at the end of December. When asked by the court whether he admitted to committing the alleged offence, the accused replied that “relatively”. “If I get an offer to negotiate a confession, I can plead guilty,” he told the court.

He then pointed out that he was “responsible for his mother’s disappearance” and that he “buried the body in the river”. “I made you dig this river for 20 months for nothing,” he said.
