An adult moose tried to jump over the fence of a property in Warsaw's Włochy district. However, the animal impaled itself on the bars and was injured. The decision was made to euthanize it.

We received information about the incident on Contact24. A reader reported that a moose was hanging on the fence of a property on Jutrzenki Street.

This was confirmed to us by Senior Warrant Officer Bogdan Smoter from the Warsaw Fire Department. – The moose tried to jump over the fence, but it got caught in it and was injured. It's a large animal. A game warden was on site. The moose was put down and taken off the fence – the firefighter told us. He added that one fire brigade unit was dispatched there.

Last year, Andżelika Gackowska from the Municipal Forests pointed out that there are more and more moose in Poland. – This is a species covered by a moratorium, which means it is excluded from hunting. It is also a species that has basically no natural enemies in Poland, which means that few individuals fall victim to predators, for example. Wolves can hunt young individuals, of course if they can handle a wolve – she explained.

Such fences are deadly traps for moose.

The WWF organization reports that every year several or even several dozen moose die in agony because of spikes on fences. The last decade has cost the lives of as many as 120 of these animals.. According to naturalists, the victims of dangerous, often illegal fences, commonly used on Polish properties, are also other animals – deer, roe deer, dogs. They can also be people.

WWF reminds us that moose migrate seasonally, sometimes entering built-up areas, especially since buildings and fences are increasingly appearing in areas that were previously used by wild animals. “It is increasingly common for residents of towns located near forests and wetlands to encounter moose on nearby streets or even in their own backyards,” the organization notes.

– Moose can even break through a two-meter fence. Unfortunately, when these 300-kilogram animals get caught in the sharp spikes on the fence, they impale themselves and are unable to free themselves, which leads to death or serious injuries. Such an animal cannot be saved, its suffering can only be shortened – explained Dr. Rafał Kowalczyk from the Mammal Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Białowieża, quoted in the WWF press release.
