After a few years of break, the Museum of Technology returns to the map of Warsaw’s cultural institutions. The museum at the Palace of Culture and Science will be open to visitors from February 1. New exhibitions are already waiting for them: “The history of transport – by sea, land and air” and “The history of computers – it matters!”.

– More than five years ago, the Ministry of Culture received the news that the Museum of Technology, which is loved by Poles, located in the Palace of Culture and Science, is in danger, it is in crisis, it needs to be closed, because the entity in charge is not able to maintain it any longer. At that time, there was no doubt in our ministry that the Minister of National Heritage was responsible for ensuring that this institution did not die, said the head of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, Deputy Prime Minister Piotr Gliński, during the opening of the institution. He added that the Ministry of Science and the Capital City Hall were also invited to cooperate.

He also talked about far-reaching plans to build a new museum on the grounds of the National Stadium. – Work is underway to include the new seat of the National Museum of Technology on the northern plot of PGE Narodowy, which is already at the disposal of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. We want to build a Natural History Museum nearby, he announced.

The vice-president of Warsaw, Aldona Machnowska-Góra, said in turn that Warsaw residents and tourists were waiting for the opening of the museum. “Over the past few years, we have been asking us when the museum will open,” she said.

History of transport and history of computers

The director of the Museum of Technology, Mirosław Zientarzewski, announced that the museum’s collection consists of over 15,000 exhibits. – Education is very important to us. We should infect young people with the desire to learn technology, introduce them to technical knowledge, the will and attempt to act in technical schools, or to choose science-related fields of study – he emphasized. – The museum consists of two main elements. First of all, they are created by people who are able to extract from the second element, which are the monuments collected in it, what is most valuable. They are able to show and explain history – he emphasized.

For visitors, the museum will be open from Tuesday, February 1. The new permanent exhibitions of the National Museum of Technology are “The History of Transport – by Sea, Land and Air” and “The History of Computers – It Matters!”. The first presents the development of means of transport – from wheel to plane. The exhibition includes, among others a dozen motorcycles or a Smyk microcar that did not have a door.

Documents found by the tragically deceased pilot Franciszek Żwirka, which until now were in the museum’s collection, but were not made available to visitors, will also be permanently exhibited.

“Computer history – it counts!” presents simple basic tools, e.g. abacus, first calculators, but also carousel memory for computers, transistor analog analytical machine, computer transistors, personal computers and also play a game on a machine.

It got into trouble a few years ago

The largest institution of technical museology in Poland, the Museum of Technology and Industry, which started operating in 1955, continuing the work of the pre-war Museum of Industry and Technology, has struggled with financial problems for years. In June 2016, the management of the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw, where the museum is located, terminated the lease – the reason was the facility’s indebtedness, which included, among others, arrears in rent payments. At the end of 2016, the management board of the Palace of Culture and Science called the museum to empty the rooms it occupied.

At the beginning of 2017, the main board of the Federation of Scientific and Technical Associations of the Supreme Technical Organization, running the museum, adopted a resolution to liquidate the facility. In the first days of June 2017, the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage announced that on the initiative of the Minister of Culture, an agreement between the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the authorities of Warsaw was made to create the National Museum of Technology.

On July 2, 2018, representatives of the institution signed a letter of intent on cooperation between the National Museum of Technology and the Office of Technical Inspection. Earlier, at the end of 2017, the National Museum of Technology took over the collections of the former NOT Museum of Technology and Industry.
