About 500 negatives made in the 1960s and 1970s were found in the basement of the Youth Cultural Center at Łazienkowska Street. Employees of the facility want to decipher who the people in the photos are.

Cardboard boxes with negatives made in the 1960s and 1970s were discovered by MDK employees while cleaning the basement. – The albums on top turned out to be empty and we wanted to use them for ongoing activities. But something touched me and I looked deeper. Real treasures were hidden under the layer of empty albums. As it turned out, some of the albums hid real photographic gems – reports Tomasz Tuszkowski, deputy director of MDK Łazienkowska, quoted in the press release.

The negatives found in the basement depict people and events related to the activities of MDK, founded in 1952. Some of them have already been called. The photos show, among others: gymnasts in the sports hall, a youth double bass quartet during one of the rehearsals or children taking part in modeling classes. Employees of the Miejskie Zakłady Autobusowe were also immortalized posing by the bus – most likely in the depot at Ostrobramska Street and the launching of the boat on the Vistula.

Project “Stories with Soul”

Many negatives still hide undiscovered stories from years ago. The photos will be developed, scanned and made available to the inhabitants of Warsaw. For this purpose, cooperation was established with from the Center for Social Archiving. In addition, an educational project “Stories with a Soul” has started at MDK Łazienkowska, which aims to find both the authors of the photos and learn about the history of the photographed participants. People who take part in the classes try to answer the following questions: what happened to the photographed people, whether participation in the activities of the Youth Cultural Center influenced their lives, and how they remember those times.

In deciphering the riddles, the project participants are supported by the Department of Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, which also helped to secure the found negatives.

In turn, the employees of MDK Łazienkowska appeal to the inhabitants of the capital to report to them if they recognized themselves or someone from their family or friends in the photographs they found. More information about historical photos can be found on the Facebook profile: Projekt “Stories with a Soul”.
