The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways submitted to the Provincial Inspectorate of Building Supervision the documents received from the State Fire Service. The next – last – step will be obtaining the consent of the Masovian Voivode. Road builders keep saying that the route will be put into use “this fall”.

– We submitted to the Voivodship Inspectorate of Construction Supervision the documents received from the State Fire Service after the inspection in the tunnel in the Ursynów section of the Southern Bypass of Warsaw. WINB employees must check the extensive as-built documentation, then carry out a field inspection and issue a decision on the use permit, explained Małgorzata Tarnowska, spokeswoman for the Warsaw branch of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways.

She emphasized that after obtaining this decision, the last step would be to obtain the consent of the Mazowieckie Voivode: – S2 between the Puławska and Warszawa Wilanów junctions will be opened for traffic this autumn.

On Friday, the firefighters released positive safety opinion on the POW tunnel. They were second commissioning of the fire brigade. In mid-October, the first decision of the firefighters was negative, because the ventilation during the tests did not achieve the required final parameters. One of the six fans was malfunctioning.

Brig. Karol Kierzkowski from the State Fire Service indicated then that the firefighters’ decision was due to the fact that the ventilation, which would remove all toxins, exhaust fumes and smoke, did not meet the parameters. “There are six fans, one of which is defective,” explained the firefighter. All other fire safety related items such as detection, smoke vents, circuit breakers, fire service and water supply were working properly.

An investment for over four billion zlotys

The Ursynów tunnel is part of the Southern Bypass of Warsaw. From December 22, 2020, drivers have at their disposal over 15 kilometers a section of this route between the Warszawa-Wilanów and Lubelska junctions together with the bridge over the Vistula. The route can be accessed through four interchanges: Warszawa-Wilanów, Wał Miedzeszyński, Patriotów and Lubelska.

The total cost of constructing three sections of S2, forming a part of the Southern Bypass of Warsaw, is approx. PLN 4.6 billion, of which nearly PLN 1.7 billion is co-financing from the European Union under the infrastructure and environment operational program.
