Debates, exhibitions, a music, cabaret and theater scene as well as an intergenerational club-café. This is only part of the wide cultural offer that will be located in the building at the intersection of Świętokrzyska and Nowy Świat Streets – the authorities of Śródmieście boast. The new tenant has received the keys and is starting to renovate the premises, which has been empty for over a year.

– This is a place known for its cultural events and we will want to maintain this tradition – says Krzysztof Lang, president of the ProMuzeum Foundation, whose offer was selected by the competition jury. He adds: – We plan to make the most of this space and its potential. We will create a real cultural center of Warsaw. A place accessible to everyone.

Independent cultural center

An independent cultural center, cafe and restaurant will be built in the former Nowy Świat cafe. An art gallery is being prepared on the first floor, as well as a small performance hall, where theater performances, concerts, meetings with authors and art auctions will be held. – We will focus on a young, independent and grassroots culture, while creating a professional platform for cooperation between creators and recipients with commercial entities. Varsavianists and readers of good literature will find their place – says Michał Brzozowski, a well-known cultural animator, creator of “1500 meters for rent” in Powiśle, who will co-create this place with the ProMuzeum Foundation.

The interior will undergo a thorough revitalization. In close cooperation with the Warsaw Conservator of Monuments and the Real Estate Management Department, the renovation of the wall paintings and architectural detail is planned, which – as the officials assure – will restore the splendor of this place.

This is the last of ten premises in the Śródmieście District, intended last year for the Warsaw program “locality for culture”. Its assumption is to rent commercial premises for cultural activities. Tenants selected in profiled competitions are to demonstrate not only their experience and cultural achievements, but also to indicate the planned cultural offer already at the competition stage.

– In this way, we enliven the space of the very center of Warsaw. In 2022, we signed nearly 200 lease agreements with new tenants in Śródmieście. Thanks to the “Local for Culture” program, in addition to commercial activities, interesting artistic, cultural and social initiatives will be carried out in city premises – says Aleksander Ferens, mayor of the Śródmieście district.

The restaurant will be open from spring

Of the ten “culture venues”, three have already started operations, two are opening this month, and five are under renovation. Among those already open, there are e.g. East House website. It is run by the KARTA Centre, a central place for dialogue between the nations of Eastern Europe – against war and repression, in the name of historical truth and future peace in the East. It is a central meeting space, e.g. for Belarusian and Ukrainian organizations. In June, the opening of the largest literary scene in Poland – Big Book Cafe MDM – is planned. A three-story bookstore in the very center of Warsaw, a professionally equipped stage and a plan for meetings with stars of theatre, cinema, music, improvisation and literary texts.

The grand opening of the premises at Nowy Świat is planned by the tenant in the spring of next year.

The place has been vacant for over a yeartvnwarszawa.pl

In mid-April, we reported on tvnwarszawa.pl about the conclusion of the competition for the new host of the building at Nowy Świat 61/63. The restaurant has been empty for over a year, and once it was teeming with social and cultural life. In the People’s Republic of Poland, the Nowy Świat cafe was promoted by Kabaret Dudek. A dozen or so years ago, the tenement house was the site of Nowy Brave World, a cultural center created by the thriving community of “Krytyka Polityczna”. Then the New World of Music was installed in the cafe, which organized concerts and sublet part of the space of the Tarabuk bookstore. But the district authorities decided to arrange everything anew and did not renew the lease of the existing tenants. In February 2022, the pianos had to leave.
