Warsaw. Prof. died Piotr Węgleński, former rector of the University of Warsaw

About the death of prof. Piotr Węgleński was informed by the University of Warsaw on Friday. He was an outstanding scientist, a long-time vice-rector and rector of the university.

Prof. Piotr Węgleński (born June 29, 1939 in Świdniki) graduated from the Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences, University of Warsaw in 1961. In 1965 he obtained a doctoral degree, and then – in 1974 – a habilitated doctor. In 1982, he received the academic title of professor in the field of biological sciences, and seven years later he became a full professor.

At the University of Warsaw, he served as director of the Institute of Genetics and Biotechnology, deputy director of the Institute of Botany and vice-rector. From 1999 to 2005 he was the rector of this university. He also worked at the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Benefits of vaccines and GMOs

He was a member of the Warsaw Scientific Society and a full member of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He published a number of scientific works, mainly in the field of genetics. His achievements include, among others: “Molecular Basis of Life” (1976), “Genetic Engineering” (1981), “Molecular Genetics” (2012).

He was a supporter of educating society, e.g. on the issue of GMOs or vaccines. – We must beat our chests that, as a scientific community, we do not explain things such as the benefits of vaccines and the benefits of GMOs to people enough. There are several topics on which the scientific world should better educate society, he said during one of the expert debates in 2023.

In 2002, he was awarded the Brazilian Commander’s Cross of the Order of the Southern Cross, and in 2005 – the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
