Warsaw Public Transport summed up 2022. 863 million passengers, 102 million tickets

The number of Warsaw Public Transport passengers in 2022 amounted to over 863 million and was almost 37 percent higher than the year before. Nearly 102 million tickets were sold, which brought in revenues to the city budget of almost PLN 776 million. Compared to 2021, this means a significant increase – by 28 and 33 percent, respectively – calculated the capital city hall.

In 2022, vehicles of the Warsaw Public Transport (WTP) transported exactly 863,445,768 passengers, of which 34,612,711 on the trains of Koleje Mazowieckie and Warszawskie Koleje Dojazdowa – under the “Common Ticket ZTM-KM-WKD”. The year before, it was 630,886,531 and 28,206,875, respectively. This means that the number of WTP passengers increased by over 36.9 percent, and in the case of a combined ticket by 27.7 percent.

Passengers usually choose buses

“Buses were the most popular. In 2022, they were used by 403,032,807 people – 287,313,526 people a year earlier (an increase of 40.3%). The second place, in terms of the number of people transported, was taken by trams with 247,221,160 passengers (32% increase compared to 2021). The largest number of passengers arrived in the metro, their number increased by over 41% – from 113,863,453 in 2021 to 160,818,910 in 2022. This is the result of the expansion of the second underground railway line by two new stations in Wola and Bemowo and three in Bródno. SKM trains carried 17,760,180 passengers, and thus the number of people using them increased by 21.8%, the city hall reported.

As reported, in 2022, 101,732,768 tickets of all types were sold in Warsaw. Compared to the previous year (79,266,978 tickets sold), this represents an increase of 28 percent. “The city budget in 2022 received PLN 775,903,806 for the tickets sold. A year earlier, passengers spent PLN 585,074,823 on tickets. The proceeds increased by 33 percent” – it was calculated.

Passengers most often chose time tickets – in 2022 they bought 54,017,327 tickets. This is 29 percent more than in 2021 (41,880,931 units). At the same time, compared to 2021, the number of long-term tickets sold increased by 34 percent – from 3,285,916 to 4,409,911.

They prefer to buy tickets from vending machines

And how do Varsovians buy tickets? Last year, they were most likely to buy them from stationary ticket machines. They purchased 33,025,237 units in devices available in the most popular points of the city and at metro stations (27,175,723 in the previous year). The second place was taken by sales mobile applications. 27,906,802 tickets were sold this way. A year earlier, there were 15,514,244 units, which means an almost 80% increase in the popularity of this distribution channel. It is the fastest growing sales channel. At the same time, the interest in buying tickets at stationary points, such as kiosks and shops, decreases year by year. In 2022, 14,310,783 tickets were sold in them, i.e. 14 percent. of all tickets, while in 2021 it was 18 percent.

Mobile ticket vending machines were the third most popular method of purchasing tickets. They were chosen 25,320,502 times. A year earlier, 21,419,275 tickets were purchased in devices installed in vehicles. The popularity of this distribution channel increased by almost 18.2 percent.

Last year, ticket inspectors carried out 8,032,747 inspections. Compared to 2021 (6,538,351 inspections), there were 18.6 percent more. more. They issued 168,650 additional fees, most of which – 102,455 – were paid by free riders on the spot. The remaining 66,195 received payment orders. “The share of people traveling without a valid ticket amounted to 2.1% and was lower than in 2021 (2.3%). The number of fees paid during on-site inspections increased significantly. In 2022, they accounted for 60.7% of all fees additional, and a year earlier 48.2 percent, officials said.


Last year was marked by the expansion of the second metro line, the tram network, the “Park and Ride” car parks and the delivery of new trains, trams and buses.

In June 2022, a 2.5-kilometre section was commissioned second subway line – located on the border of Wola and Bemowo. The inhabitants of the western districts and towns near Warsaw gained two stations – Ulrychów and Bemowo. The journey from the currently last western station to Śródmieście takes about 13 minutes, and the entire line from Bemowo to Bródno takes about half an hour.

The last eastern section of the second metro line was put into service in September 2022. This fragment measures 3.9 km and consists of three stations: Zacisze, Kondratowicza and dirty. This section of the metro guarantees the inhabitants of Targówek and Białołęka an efficient, fast and convenient connection with Praga, Śródmieście, Wola and Bemowo. The journey between the Bródno and Świętokrzyska stations (with the possibility of changing to the first metro line) takes about 20 minutes.

During the last summer holidays, Tramwaje Warszawskie started the construction of a tram route between the center of Warsaw and Wilanów. The new, over seven-kilometer route will start at the intersection of Puławska and Goworka streets, and then it will run along the following streets: Spacerowa – Belwederska – Jana III Sobieskiego – al. of the Republic. It is part of a larger investment that will ultimately connect Wola, Ochota, Śródmieście and Wilanów. As part of the investment, two branches of the route will also be built: along J. Gagarina Street: from Spacerowa to Czerniakowska, and along św. Bonifacego: from Jan III Sobieski to the Stegny bus terminus.

In addition, Warsaw Trams will modernize about 1.2 kilometers of tracks along Wolska and M. Kasprzaka Streets. The new route will provide quick access to two stations of the second metro line – Rondo Daszyńskiego and Rondo ONZ.

Fleet and parking

In 2022, the WTP fleet was enriched with 119 modern and environmentally friendly vehicles. The first six out of 37 ordered trains have arrived in Warsaw Škoda Varsovia subway station. At the end of the year, five new trains were running on the first and second metro lines.

Last year, the Fast Urban Railway introduced the first Impuls 2 trains on the tracks – produced by Newag from Nowy Sącz. The municipal railway operator bought a total of 21 trains – six four-car and 15 five-car. These trains, when connected in tandems, provide over 370 seats.

Miejskie Zakłady Autobusowe went to the streets of the capital with gas-powered Sancity buses. These are vehicles manufactured by Autosan – under the contract for the supply of 90 articulated low-emission vehicles. By the end of last year, half of the contract had been completed, and thus there were almost 500 zero- and low-emission vehicles in the rolling stock park of the city bus operator.

The end of last year coincided with the delivery to Warsaw of the 50th Varsolino tram produced by the Korean company Hyundai. Passengers have already traveled in 33 trains, and another 17 were undergoing tests.

In 2022, two new “Park i Ride” car parks were commissioned in Warsaw – Żerań PKP and Warszawa Jeziorki.

Repair of stops

Last year, ZTM carried out renovation works at 21 stops: two in Bemowo; three each in Białołęka, Mokotów, Ursynów and Wola; one each in Ochota and Praga-Południe; one in Rembertów and four in Wawer. Five new stops were built – in Bemowo, Mokotów and Wola.

40 new shelters were set up at the stops in the capital city: in Bemowo, Białołęka and Targówek – seven each; in Bielany, Ochota and Żoliborz as well as in Śródmieście, Ursus and Wawer – one each; two in Praga-Południe and 11 in Wola. Seventeen of the 40 new roofs are equipped with a photovoltaic installation. At the same time, 25 shelters were moved. Roofs in good technical condition were moved from unused stops or from a warehouse to places where they had not previously been used or were exploited. In the next 16 sheds – as part of the greening of stops – sedum was laid. Bemowo gained two green roofs; Bielany, Praga-Południe and Wola – one each; Mokotów – eight, and Ursynów – three. Currently, there are 37 shelters covered with greenery on the streets of Warsaw.

In 2022, the network of Warsaw bus lanes was extended by almost ten kilometers. A two-kilometer bus lane has been marked out in the Służewiecka Valley and al. Gen. W. Sikorski. On Puławska Street, a 7.5-kilometer bus lane appeared in both directions on the section from Poleczki Street to the city limits. In addition to permanent bus lanes, temporary bus lanes were also marked out for the period of construction of the tram route to Wilanów.

The year 2022 also brought an increase in the share of “tram” intersections equipped with the system green wave – from 60 to 71 percent. This means that already 187 Warsaw intersections through which trams pass have a modern tool installed, thanks to which the tram almost always has a green light.

Bus priorities have also been implemented at an increasing number of intersections. They control traffic in such a way as to ensure efficient passage on the green for as many buses as possible, while maintaining the smoothness of individual traffic. In 2022, the system operated at 58 intersections.

ZTM in schools

Last year, employees of ZTM and Warsaw’s operators again visited schools in Warsaw, where they conducted classes on “Traffic education”. As part of it, primary school students learned about the functioning and use of public transport.

The classes discussed the principles of safe travel, types of means of communication, the advantages of public transport and the rules of behavior when traveling, including during emergency situations. The practical part took place in an electric bus placed in front of the school. Students learned about the structure of the bus, vehicle markings, passenger information system, the operation of validators and ticket machines, the rules of safe entry and exit from public transport vehicles and the rules of leaving them in an emergency. In 2022, 16 classes were organized in 14 schools.
