Warsaw-Radom Airport is waiting for its opening. – This is not the airport that everyone remembers from a few years ago – it is a completely different airport with modern infrastructure tailored to the needs of passengers and airlines – Anna Dermont, spokesperson of the State Enterprise “Porty Lotnicze” (PPL), assured TVN24 Biznes. This year, the new airport is expected to handle around 200,000 passengers.

PPL, which has been managing the airport since 2018, announced that the Warsaw-Radom airport (RDO) would be launched at the turn of March and April. However, the exact date is not yet known. – We are waiting for the completion of the certification process conducted by the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority – ed.), administrative proceedings are in progress. We are waiting for the administrative decision to be issued and then we will inform you about the date of launching the airport’s operations, Anna Dermont said.

ULC spokeswoman Karina Lisowska informed us that the certification process is ongoing and “at this stage it is too early” to say when it will end.

LOT Polish Airlines, which is currently the only regular carrier at the Warsaw-Radom airport, plans that the first flights from the south of Mazovia will take place at the end of April. Those interested in flights from Radom have a limited number of connections to choose from. – We currently have the following regular destinations reported: Copenhagen, Paris, Preveza, Rome, Tirana and charter: Antalya, Burgas, Djerba, Majorca, Monastir, Taba, Varna – informed Dermont, adding that “at the moment” PPL does not expect to launch domestic flights from and to the new port.

The national carrier is selling tickets for flights to Copenhagen, Paris and Rome, which will be launched on April 28. The connection to Tirana is scheduled to start on June 11, and to Preveza on June 16.

The port manager assures that he is working on expanding the network of connections. – At the moment, we have PLL LOT among regular carriers. When it comes to charter carriers, they will operate flights for the following offices: Coral Travel, Exim Tours, Greek Travel, GTS, Itaka, Nekera, Rego-Bis, Sun&Fun, and TUI, PPL spokeswoman said. – PPL is in talks with various carriers – both traditional and low-cost carriers. The airlines are interested in being present at the Warsaw-Radom Airport, we are constantly working on expanding the network – she added.

According to her assurances, “the interest of airline partners and tour operators is huge.” Anna Dermont does not hide her optimism that soon after the opening, new carriers will be attracted to the airport.

PPL estimates that in the first, incomplete year of operation, the airport will serve about 200,000 passengers. passengers. According to Dermont, the Warsaw-Radom airport “will certainly relieve Warsaw in terms of charter flights and fill the market gap when it comes to the Radom region, where almost a million inhabitants live.” – The port in Radom will be a natural choice not only for the inhabitants of Radom, but also for the entire Mazovia and neighboring provinces – Świętokrzyskie, Kielce and Lublin regions – she assessed.

The PPL spokeswoman also noted that after the construction of the Warsaw – Grójec section is completed, it will be possible to cover the entire route to Radom using the expressway.

Dermont pointed out that the COVID-19 pandemic, “although it was a catastrophic event for the aviation industry, allowed Chopin Airport to ‘breathe’, but in the long run the capacity at Chopin Airport will end.” – The facts are that we can only carry out 600 operations a day and these are restrictions resulting from the regulations. That is why it was so important to make a decision to expand the airport in Radom – she emphasized.

The cost of building a new airport

For the time being, PPL does not want to inform how much the total cost of building the new Warsaw-Radom airport will be. – When it comes to the final costs – we want to hold off until the project is fully completed. All outlays came from PPL’s ​​own funds, but it should be noted that PPL does not receive funds from the state budget, the spokeswoman for the State Enterprise “Porty Lotnicze” informed.

In September last year, the director of the airport, Grzegorz Tuszyński, informed about the contracting of works in the amount of about PLN 800 million, indicating that “this is the budget of the entire airport expansion program”.

The airport in Radom began operating in May 2014. For a short time, flights from this city took place, among others to Riga and Berlin. It was the only public airport in Poland that was built without EU support. The city invested PLN 100 million in its creation. After the court announced the bankruptcy of the municipal company Port Lotniczy Radom in 2018, the airport was bought by PPL.
