“On the International Volunteer Day, I want to say that Warsaw is proud that it has you,” wrote the Mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski, on social media. He addressed these words to the Warsaw Volunteers.
“For helping the needy, caring for the weaker, for support in difficult times of the pandemic. For a good heart, a lot of empathy – for being there. Warsaw Volunteers, on the International Volunteer Day, I would like to say that Warsaw is proud to have you! Thank you for everything “- wrote Trzaskowski on Twitter on Sunday.
The International Volunteer Day is a holiday celebrated annually on December 5, it was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985.
They helped with municipal vaccination points
– For many capital city organizations it is a time to summarize, reflect and celebrate successful activities with volunteers. And 2021 was another year full of challenges – also in volunteering. We are still facing a pandemic. As usual, Warsaw volunteers are ready to act – wherever the need arises. This year, there were, inter alia, in municipal Public Vaccination Centers. It was also thanks to their involvement that the points worked so well. Volunteers also continue to help people staying at home under the “Warsaw supports” system – said Trzaskowski in a video posted on his Twitter account.
Warsaw Volunteers have been operating for five years
The project for the development of volunteering in Warsaw “Ochotnicy Warszawscy” has been operating since 2016. As part of this initiative, volunteers have the opportunity to take advantage of a year-round and free offer of training and supervisory meetings, thanks to which they can improve their competences and inspire themselves to further activities. Every year, the offer is used by several hundred volunteers from many institutions and non-governmental organizations. The offer includes, for example, training in public speaking or managing oneself in time, as well as supervisions with a psychologist, dedicated primarily to those who work for the sick, elderly or those at risk of social exclusion. Anyone who engages in volunteering in Warsaw can take advantage of the offer.
With volunteers in mind, Warsaw also implements numerous training programs for volunteer organizers. “For several years, the capital has been focusing on developing entities that want to cooperate with volunteers. It supports institutions, associations and foundations in creating volunteering in a professional and standard-compliant manner. It is thanks to volunteering coordinators, equipped with knowledge and tools for work, that volunteers in Warsaw can derive even greater benefits from your involvement “- we read in the announcement of the town hall on this subject.
Municipal Portal of Volunteering is co-created by Warsaw organizations and institutions. They can post information about their activities on it free of charge and look for people to help. “Every city resident who visits the portal can see what is happening in his area or what activities his favorite institution is planning, and easily volunteer at a given event” – describe the volunteers
On the website of the Warsaw Volunteers you can also find information about upcoming initiatives and searching for volunteers. The next such event will be, for example, the Warsaw Christmas Eve with Delivery. People in need of the capital will receive Christmas packages from them.
