In the first quarter of 2025, work on the design documentation for the renovation of the Warszawa Wschodnia station is to be completed. At the end of the year, railway workers want to announce a tender for a modernization contractor.
The president of PKP PLK, Piotr Wyborski, announced that throughout 2025 the company intends to announce tenders worth PLN 15-20 billion. He explained that next year's “biggest topics” will include the modernization of the Warszawa Wschodnia station.
Tender in the fourth quarter
Wyborski said that design documentation is currently being developed. – We assume that it will be completed in the first quarter, which will allow us to prepare documentation for the tender and announce it in the fourth quarter of next year – said the president of PKP PLK.
He emphasized that the tender will be announced after the modernization of the Warszawa Zachodnia station is completed. – The full functionalities of the Warszawa Zachodnia station, related to the underground passage and commercialization, will be launched at the turn of the third and fourth quarter of next year. Around this time, we will announce a tender for the modernization of the Warszawa Wschodnia station – he added.
The platforms will have a common roof
Renovation of the most loaded railway line in Poland, i.e. the so-called “medium-sized” has been going on since 2020. The works that started then at the Warszawa Zachodnia station are nearing completion. The disruptions affected primarily railway passengers, but when the works move to the east, they will also affect tram and bus users, drivers and pedestrians. The city center – from Towarowa to PowiĆle – will be excavated. Railway workers intend to completely uncover the cross-town tunnel that runs under Aleje Jerozolimskie.
One of the stages of the renovation of the cross-city line will be the modernization of Warsaw East. The work there will not involve communication paralysis. The platforms will gain a common roof, as was done at the Western Railway Station, and the viaducts and tunnels will be rebuilt. However, the works will not cover the main hall of the station, which was renovated for Euro 2012.
The tunnel will connect both Pragues
The renovation of the station is also an opportunity to build a tunnel that will connect both Pragues. Last spring, an agreement was signed between the Capital City Development Authority and Torprojekt for the construction project of a tunnel under the railway tracks along ul. TysiÄ clecia and developing the concept of ul. TysiÄ clecia from ul. Ć»upnicza to ul. Kijowska. The contract is the implementation of the agreement that the city concluded a year earlier with the railway workers.
According to the concept, a dual carriageway, sidewalks and bicycle paths will be built in the tunnel. The investment will connect Kijowska and ƻupnicza streets. On the western side of the tunnel, closer to the Warszawa Wschodnia station, there is space for a tram line and stops with entrances to suburban railway platforms, which will facilitate transfers.
