Road builders opened bids in a tender for additional greenery at Plac Trzech Krzyży. There were five of them, they range from PLN 1.2 to 1.6 million. A company that will take care of the greenery on this square should be known soon.

In March, the Council of Warsaw granted the Municipal Roads Authority money for the implementation of additional works related to greenery. A tender has been announced. Five offers were received, ranging from PLN 1.2 to 1.6 million. Now they will be analyzed.

“If the procedure is successful, the contractor will have 120 days to carry out the work. The budget at our disposal is over PLN 1.4 million. The offers seem to be favorable. We hope for a quick settlement of the tender,” ZDM said in a statement.

A total of 28 new trees will appear on Plac Trzech Krzyży. Four pear trees have already been planted in its northern part, the rest is the subject of an ongoing tender. It’s July 16 and eight hawthorns. These will be trees with a height of about six meters and a minimum trunk circumference of 30 centimeters (hawthorns) to 50 centimeters (lime trees). New lawns, hedges and clusters of perennials will also be created. It’s over 2700 square meters of green areas. All existing ones will be preserved, there will also be new ones.

Greenery will appear in place of concrete. The “heat islands” in front of the church of St. Aleksandra, on a triangular square at the intersection of Żurawia and Bracka Streets and in the area of Książęca Street. Redundant asphalt surfaces excluded from traffic will also be replaced with greenery. New greenery will appear successively as construction works are completed and construction facilities are liquidated.

The cobblestone has been left and will be unveiled in the future

The first works on Plac Trzech Krzyży began last year. “From the beginning, the investment schedule was shadowed historic pavement, which on a large area is located under the asphalt road. The find was not a surprise, but only after revealing the scale and technical condition of the pavement, it was possible to choose a detailed action plan together with the conservator of monuments.

Initially, it was uncertain how large an area the cobblestones are present in and how well preserved they are. Therefore, demolition was done carefully and slowly. Then it was inventoried by archaeological supervision. At the same time, arrangements were made with the conservator of monuments as to how to deal with the cobblestones. It was eventually repaired and reassembled.

“To protect it from degradation, in sections where traffic will take place, the pavement has been temporarily secured with a special mesh placed under the asphalt. This will allow it to be preserved for the future, until the final revitalization of the square, when the pavement could be more exposed. For now, the old layout of the pavement and tram tracks will be exposed point by point, constituting a testimony to the history of the square.

“New, better version”

“The result of talks with Professor Jakub Lewicki, the Mazovian Voivodship Conservator of Monuments, is a new, better version of the project for the reconstruction of Plac Trzech Krzyży” – notes ZDM.

What else will change?

The greenery and renovation of the surface of the square complement a number of other changes that are already in progress. The pedestrian crossing in the central part of the square, rated low in the audit of pedestrian crossings, will gain signaling and asylum. Passengers of public transport will be able to change buses more easily thanks to the concentration of today’s scattered stops in one place: in the vicinity of the Institute of the Deaf.

The square itself, today one of the main “bicycle teleports” of the capital, will also gain a complete bicycle infrastructure. New bicycle lanes will be marked out on the roadways, which will ensure the connection of the existing infrastructure for cyclists in Aleje Ujazdowskie up to Nowy Świat, as well as bicycle routes crossing the square transversely. This arrangement will be complemented by a two-way bicycle path on the eastern side of the square from Aleje Ujazdowskie to Książęca Street.
