On Monday morning, the water level in the Vistula River at the Warsaw boulevards dropped to 24 centimeters. This is the lowest result in the history of measurements. According to forecasts, this value will drop even further in the coming days.
According to the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management in Warsaw, on Monday, September 9 after 7 a.m., the water meter located near the Vistula Boulevards showed only 24 centimeters. The forecast for the coming days is dire. On Tuesday, the water level is to drop to 22 centimeters and remain there until Wednesday, and on Thursday it will reach 21 centimeters.
Record low water level in the Vistula
Due to the lack of rainfall and high air temperature, the water level in the Vistula River is dropping to record low levels. On Thursday it was 29 centimetres, on Friday 28, and on Saturday, September 7 at 7:20 p.m. the water meter at the Warszawa-Bulwary hydrological station showed 26 centimetres, which was equal to the “inglorious record”. It took only a few hours to beat it. In the morning measurements on Sunday, the water meter showed 25 centimetres.
IMGW hydrologist Michał Sikora said last week that the situation is bad not only on the Vistula, but also on other rivers in the country. 69 percent of water gauge stations record the low water zone, which is less than usual. 27 percent of rivers are in the medium water zone, and only four percent are in the high water level. – We have 44 warnings of hydrological drought – Sikora said.
