Warsaw. Rembertów. The contract for the viaduct over the tracks has been signed. There is also an agreement on the tunnel

Railway workers and the capital city hall signed an agreement with the contractor for the construction of a viaduct over the railway tracks along Chełmżyńska Street in Rembertów. An agreement was also concluded regarding financing and cooperation in the construction of a road tunnel in the same district.

On Wednesday, PKP PLK and the Warsaw authorities signed an agreement with the contractor – Intop Warszawa Sp. z o. o. – for the construction of a road viaduct over the tracks along ul. Chełmżyńska. According to railway workers, the value of the contract is PLN 68.5 million net, of which PKP PL will finance half. Part of the investment will be co-financed by the European Union from the Cohesion Fund under the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and Environment FEnIKS.

– The construction of collision-free crossings is an important element of the investment, which improves train traffic and increases the level of safety on railways and road traffic. New facilities enable better communication within cities and help reduce traffic jams. The Warsaw agglomeration is an example of a place where the number of crossings is gradually decreasing and the number of railway viaducts and tunnels under the tracks is increasing, so that along with the increase in safety, the quality of life of the inhabitants also increases – said Piotr Malepszak, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Infrastructure, quoted in the railway workers' press release.

Road, sidewalk and bicycle path

Road viaduct along ul. Chełmżyńska will improve communication in the district. The facility will feature a road with one lane in each direction. There will be a sidewalk on both sides of the crossing over the tracks, and an additional bicycle path on one side. In addition, ramps, stairs and elevators will be built near the viaduct to facilitate access for people with limited mobility. The viaduct will be part of a new road that will be located between the intersection of Chełmżyńska and Stelmachów streets.

The length of the viaduct over the tracks is approximately 140 meters. The new facility will replace the one currently operating on ul. Chełmżyńska rail and road crossing. PKP PLK expects that the facility will be built in approximately 16-18 months. However, after the viaduct is built, the existing level crossing will be closed.

Tunnel agreement

The second collision-free crossing of the tracks in Rembertów will be built along Marsa Street. In place of the current rail-road crossing, a tunnel with an underground passage for pedestrians will be built. Also on Thursday, railway workers and the capital city hall finalized the details of the implementation agreement setting out the principles of cooperation and investment financing. The tender procedure and implementation will be conducted by the Capital City Development Authority in consultation with PLK SA. The city and PKP PLK share the costs equally.

Earlier, railway workers prepared a feasibility study for the investment and obtained an environmental decision. The city, in turn, provided a permit for the road investment. The next stage will be the announcement by SZRM of a tender to find a contractor for the works. The tender procedure is scheduled to commence in the third quarter of this year. The expected investment implementation time is 30 months.

The new road leading to the tunnel will start at the intersection of Marsa and Ilskiego streets, where a roundabout will be built. The 140-meter-long road tunnel will feature a road with two lanes for cars.

To improve pedestrian traffic during the tunnel construction, an underground passage with elevators will be marked on the eastern side. The nearby road system will be rebuilt and connected to the planned tunnel.

The City Hall explains that the exit from the tunnel will be in the middle of Chruściela “Montera” Avenue, near Strazacka Street. At the intersection of al. A roundabout was designed at Chruściel “Montera” from Cyruliki, which will ensure all turning conditions, including the possibility of turning around.

Tunnel in Wesoła

Earlier, in March, a similar implementation agreement was signed regarding the tunnel under the tracks in Wesoła along 1 Praskiego Pułku Street. In the coming days, the city will announce a tender for the selection of the investment contractor. Work on the construction of the facility is expected to last 24 months from the moment the contract is signed with the contractor.

Investments in Rembertów and Wesoła are carried out as part of the project “Improvement of safety at the intersections of railway lines and roads – stage IIb – viaduct part” conducted by PLK SA. The total value of the project to build three collision-free intersections in Warsaw is PLN 380 million.
