The reconstruction of Plac Trzech Krzyży is underway. Although one may have reservations about the pace of works and the number of workers involved, the Municipal Roads Authority assures that the work schedule has not changed compared to last year’s shifts. The investment is to be completed in the summer.

Works related to the reconstruction of Plac Trzech Krzyży began in September last year. The eastern carriageway was closed to traffic, and the bus stop towards the de Gaulle roundabout was moved closer to Aleje Ujazdowskie. Recently, the editors of tvnwarszawa.pl have been receiving signals that not much is happening at the construction site. Workers are rarely seen on site, and if they are, few. We checked how it is in reality. On Tuesday morning, our reporter Tomasz Zieliński went to the place.

– Work is in progress, but it does not look very impressive. There are only a few workers on the construction site to do the paving work. When it comes to heavy equipment, only one excavator can be seen – describes Zieliński.

Jakub Dybalski from ZDM maintains that the works on Plac Trzech Krzyży will end this summer. – The postponement of the schedule is due to what happened last year, nothing has changed here. Firstly, from conservation decisions related to cobblestones and tram tracks, and they concerned a large area of work. Secondly, from the extension of their scope with greenery – explains the representative of the capital’s road builders.

As previously reported on tvnwarszawa.pl, shortly after the start of the works, they were interrupted due to the discovery of historical cobblestones and tram tracks under the layer of asphalt. The Mazowieckie Voivodship Conservator of Monuments was notified of the find. As the conservator informed at the time, the pavement is well preserved. “We will do everything together with the authorities of the Capital City of Warsaw and the Municipal Roads Authority to please the eyes of Warsaw residents” – he announced. Eventually, it will be covered with asphalt, but in such a technology that it can be unveiled in an unspecified future.

In ZDM we asked what was left to be done. – What remains to be done is: asphalting the road in the eastern part of the square, finishing the paving works, relocating the shed and the ticket machine, as well as marking and rebuilding the western part – calculated Dybalski.

In order for the works to gain momentum, it is necessary to lay asphalt on the eastern part of the square (next to the Institute of the Deaf). This will enable the transfer of traffic from the western carriageway (closer to the Ministry of Development and Technology). Asphalting is heavily dependent on the weather. In winter it is impossible. At this time of the year, an additional difficulty is the inability to order larger batches of material.

How will Plac Trzech Krzyży change?

Cyclists and pedestrians will benefit from the changes at Plac Trzech Krzyży. The system of bicycle routes in Śródmieście will be supplemented with a key element. New roads and bicycle lanes in the square will connect the existing infrastructure for cyclists in Aleje Ujazdowskie up to Nowy Świat.

The safety of pedestrians and the comfort of public transport passengers will also improve. More or less in the middle of the square, on the south side of the church of St. Aleksandra, traffic lights will appear, and the pedestrian crossing will gain refuge. In turn, a new bus stop will be built at the level of the Institute of the Deaf, which will replace the existing ones, scattered on the eastern side of the square. Thanks to this, passengers will be able to depart from one common stop in the northern direction.
