The long-awaited renovation of the heavily worn tracks on Washington Avenue at Wiedza Street will begin on Monday. Trams will not run between the Washington roundabout and the Wiatraczna roundabout.
The track will undergo a comprehensive renovation at the level of Wiedza Street. According to officials, drainage will be built to solve the problem of flooding and washing away the rails.
Additionally, the “Park Skaryszewski” bus and tram stops and the crossing over the tracks will be rebuilt. The surface of both roads of Washington Avenue will also be replaced.
During the work at the International Street, tram workers will repair the crossing at the intersection with Kinowa – replacing the rails and the substructure.
There will be no trams on Washington Avenue
Due to the renovation, on Sunday, September 29, around 11:00 p.m., traffic on the track at Aleja WAWA will be closed. Until October 20, trains will not run between the Washington Roundabout and the Wiatraczna Roundabout. On this section, passengers will travel by buses on the replacement line Z-9.
During the week, during peak hours, they will arrive at the stops approximately every four minutes. Additionally, buses line 521 they will stop at all stops on Washington Avenue.
Trams line 9 they will go along Zieleniecka Avenue and Grochowska Street. Route line 24 will be shortened to a stop at the Washington roundabout.
They will take away the drivers lane
The works will start on Monday, September 30. Tram drivers will occupy the right lanes of both roads of Washington Avenue. Drivers will be left with one lane in each direction.
Additionally, on two weekends in October, part of Wiedza Street will be closed. Initially, there will be no exit from the Zwycięzców section to Washington Avenue. The detour will lead through Zwycięzców and Saska streets. In the next stage, the section on the side of the park will be closed.
Changes also for pedestrians
The construction site will also cover the area around tram and bus stops, but pedestrians will walk both along Skaryszewski Park and on the side of the allotment gardens.
Temporary bus stops will be built near the Exhibition Canal and behind the MPWiK base. The lanes through Washington Avenue will also be closed. A temporary zebra crossing will be established near the Exhibition Canal.
What's next?
At the end of October, after the resumption of tram traffic, workers will occupy the left lanes of both roads of Aleja Washington, and drivers will use the previously closed lanes. Exit from the two sections of Wiedza onto Washington Avenue will only be possible by turning right.
In the last two stages of works, tram workers will restore the surface of both roadways. First, they will close the thread towards the center and then towards Grochów. Drivers will use one lane in each direction on the adjacent road. Work outside the tracks will be completed in November.
Works at the intersection with Kinowa Street will begin in October. Also here, the right lanes of each road will be closed. There will also be no exit from both sections of Kinowa to Aleja WAWA. From Ostrobramska, drivers will only reach the local road and will have to turn right.
You will be able to reach the northern part of Kinowa via Grenadierów, Międzyborska and Stanisława Augusta streets. The detour to Kinowa on the other side of Aleja Washington will lead through the Wiatraczna roundabout and further along Aleja Usługia.
During the works on the track, the pedestrian crossing through the alley will be closed. Pedestrians will cross a temporary zebra crossing marked at the bus stop to the center.
Renovation also on Jagiellońska
In turn, from September 30 to October 31, trams will not reach the Żerań FSO loop. Routes lines 18 and 20 will be shortened to the Ratuszowa-Zoo loop, i.e. “twenties” from Ratuszowa Street will turn into the loop, and trams 18 at the Starzyńskiego roundabout will take Jagiellońska to the right.
Z-20 replacement buses will run between the Żerań FSO loop and the intersection of Targowa and Aleja “Solidarności” along the following route: Modlińska, Jagiellońska, Rondo Starzyńskiego, Jagiellońska, Cyryla i Methodego, Targowa, Aleja “Solidarności”, Jagiellońska, Rondo Starzyńskiego, Jagiellońska, Modlińska.
During this time, the developer who is building a housing estate at Jagiellońska Street will rebuild one of the crossings through the tram tracks. A second crossing will also be built in a new place – at the exit of Budzyńska-Tylicka Street. There will be new pedestrian crossings and traffic lights in both places. A storm sewage system and drainage will be built, and the “Śliwice” tram stops will also be renovated. Some works, e.g. paving, will be carried out after the resumption of tram traffic.
