A traveler from Armenia arrived at Chopin airport and went to the “nothing to report” crossing. She got caught during an inspection. In her hand luggage, officers of the National Tax Administration found diamonds worth PLN 1.5 million.
The spokeswoman for the National Tax Administration, junior student Justyna Pasieczyńska, said that the smuggling attempt took place in Warsaw at the Chopin airport.
The Ukrainian citizen arrived from Armenia and was to continue her journey to Belgium. She went to the “nothing to report” crossing, from where she was turned back by officers of the Customs and Tax Service and sent for inspection.
– The officers found precious stones in her hand luggage. It was her only luggage. All smuggled stones are diamonds. Their weight is almost 670 carats, i.e. 134 grams. The value of the seized precious stones is estimated at over PLN 1.5 million, Pasieczyńska informed.
KAS: diamonds were legal
The traveler purchased the diamonds legally – she had invoices confirming their purchase. However, she did not inform the officers that she had them. In this way, the state treasury could have lost over PLN 350,000 in unpaid tax.
The woman faces a fine.
This is another smuggling of precious stones. In November 2023, officers prevented the smuggling of diamonds, emeralds and rubies worth over PLN 950,000. The smuggler hid them in her sock and boxes of cosmetic accessories. Most of them were diamonds.
