Warsaw. Smuggling at Chopin Airport. Diamonds, emeralds and rubies in a sock

An attempt to smuggle diamonds, emeralds and rubies was foiled at Warsaw Chopin Airport. The traveler hid them in her sock. The value of the stones was estimated at almost a million zlotys.

At the airport in Warsaw, officers from the National Tax Administration sent a Ukrainian citizen for inspection. According to reports, the traveler claimed that she was in Dubai to collect important documents.

“Gemstones were found in her luggage. They were hidden in a sock and in boxes of cosmetic accessories,” we read in the KAS press release.

Most of the smuggled stones are diamonds. The inspectors also found certificates for diamonds and other stones – rubies and emeralds. The weight of all stones is over 138 carats.

The gemstones were worth almost a million

“The value of the detained precious stones is estimated at over PLN 950,000. If the stones were put on sale, the state budget losses would amount to over PLN 200,000,” KAS informs.

The case was handled by the Masovian Customs and Tax Office in Warsaw. The traveler may be fined.
