A team of specialists from the Medical University of Warsaw conducted the first operation in Poland to divide the liver of one donor and transplant it to two recipients. Patients: a 20-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man are doing well.

The procedure was performed at the Department and Clinic of General, Transplantation and Liver Surgery of the Medical University of Warsaw, headed by prof. Michal Grat.

– The operation consisted in dividing an organ taken from a deceased donor into two parts and transplanting the right part of the liver for one recipient and the left part of the liver for the second recipient – informed the press spokesman of the Medical University of Warsaw, Jarosław Kulczycki.

The patients are in good condition

Patients say that they feel good after the operation. – On January 3rd in the evening, they called me to come to the hospital on January 4th for the transplant. I was afraid, but I was reconciled to the fact that there was no other option but a transplant – said one of the recipients, 26-year-old Łukasz. As he assured in a video prepared by the Medical University of Warsaw, he feels good.

– I haven’t been sick for a long time. I went to the doctor at the end of November, from December to mid-January I was in hospitals, then I had some breaks to go home, regenerate, and suddenly a phone call that there is a liver. I didn’t really want this transplant. My results improved then and I was hoping that maybe I could get around this transplant. But then there was relief. I believed that I would recover quickly. Doctors say I’m fine, so they give me encouragement – said the second patient, twenty-year-old Weronika.

Medical University of Warsaw specialists ensure that both fragments of the liver resumed their function after transplantation. Two recipients are in good condition, and the postoperative course so far has been uncomplicated.

Challenge

According to the WUM, there will be more such procedures soon. Thanks to this, it will be possible to increase the number of transplantations, which is extremely important due to the insufficient number of available organs.

According to the hospital, starting the split liver transplant program was a huge medical and organizational challenge. However, the specialists of the Department and Clinic of General, Transplantation and Liver Surgery of the Medical University of Warsaw have many years of experience in the full range of various types of liver and biliary tract operations.

– The correct function of the transplanted liver fragments depends on many factors, including the performance of complex vascular anastomoses ensuring good blood inflow and outflow – emphasizes the spokesman of the Medical University of Warsaw.

A groundbreaking transplantation in our country was carried out by a team of fifteen surgeons, two anesthesiologists, a radiologist, five instrument nurses and four anaesthetists.

More than 20 percent of transplants were carried out at the Medical University of Warsaw

The Medical University of Warsaw is a leading center in our country performing various types of transplants. Almost every fourth vascularized organ, such as the kidney, liver and pancreas, is transplanted in WUM clinics. In 2022, 340 transplants of vascularized organs were carried out at the Medical University of Warsaw, i.e. 23 percent. of all transplants performed in transplant centers across the country last year.

– Almost half of all pancreas transplants in Poland, more than half of liver transplants and almost half of kidney transplants from a living donor take place at the Medical University of Warsaw – says prof. Wojciech Lisik, vice-rector for clinical and investment at the Medical University of Warsaw.

According to the Organization and Coordination Center for Transplantation “Poltransplant”, in 2022, 1,399 organs were transplanted in Poland (over 120 more than the year before).
