Containers with health-hazardous solvents and used chemicals are stored on the plot at Odrowąż Street in Targówek. There are about a hundred of them on display. It is not known how much is in the hall next to it, because – according to the Provincial Inspectorate for Environmental Protection – the room “was filled to the very entrance”.
We informed about the chemicals stored on the plot at Odrowąż Street last Friday on tvnwarszawa.pl. In the fenced area of the property, there are 1,000-litre containers, the so-called bins, arranged in rows. mausers. On Friday morning, the place was observed by tvnwarszawa.pl reporter Mateusz Szmelter. – On the plot there are over 100 containers with a volume of about a thousand liters. They are on two floors. Part of the structure collapsed, which could have caused the unsealing. There is a pungent chemical smell nearby, our reporter described. – The area of the property where the containers are located has been fenced off with red and white tape. There are also new-looking signs on the fence that read: “Unauthorized entry prohibited,” he added.
“Hall full to the entrance”
On Thursday, one of the containers leaked. Firefighters rushed to the spot to contain the leak. The following day, inspectors from the Voivodship Inspectorate for Environmental Protection carried out their inspection. “During the inspection carried out on March 31, 2023, the fence was damaged, which allowed unauthorized entry to the plot. In the hall building located on the plot, one of the seven gates was ajar and it was visible through the hole that there were accumulated Mauser type containers inside one on top of the other” – informed tvnwarszawa.pl Artur Brandysiewicz, spokesman for VIEP in Warsaw. He added that on Monday, April 3, a new padlock was placed on the gate and the fence was repaired.
According to the information provided by the spokesman for VIEP, the Mausers standing in plain sight are just the tip of the iceberg. “The hall has a large number of Mauser containers and barrels. Their number has not been determined due to the fact that the hall was filled to the very entrance” – described Brandysiewicz.
Moreover, the containers have been stored there since at least 2019. What’s actually in them? “An expert opinion from March 2022, commissioned by the Targówek District Office, based on tests carried out on waste samples collected in November 2021, indicated that these are hazardous wastes that should be classified as: used inorganic chemicals containing hazardous substances or other solvents and waste mixtures” – informed Artur Brandysiewicz.
Request for immediate removal of waste
In addition, the spokesman for the inspectorate indicates that already in May 2021, VIEP sent a request to the mayor of the district to take action to remove waste. “It is true that the mayor of the Targówek district is conducting administrative proceedings in this case, but the waste has still not been removed. In connection with another information from March 2023 about another unsealing of waste containers, the Mazovian Voivodship Inspectorate for Environmental Protection sent another request, this time to of the President of the Capital City of Warsaw to take immediate action to remove the waste” – summed up the spokesman for VIEP.
On Friday, in an interview with tvnwarszawa.pl, the deputy mayor of Targówek, Jędrzej Kunowski, assured that the district would try to obtain additional funds for the disposal of containers.
We also asked the deputy mayor about the ownership status of the plot. – The property belongs to a private company. The owner is known but elusive, Kunowski replied.
