TBM shields weighing 650 tons, named Anna and Krystyna, arrived in the Karolin Islands. Once assembled, they will begin drilling the four-kilometer Bemowo section of the second metro line. They will work 24 hours a day. Lazurowa, Chrzanów and Karolin stations should welcome the first passengers in 2026.

The Warsaw TBM shields weigh over 650 tons, are almost 100 meters long and have a diameter of over six meters each. After completing the tunneling work, the M2 line was inspected and renovated.

Now the shields Anna and Krystyna set off to continue working on tunneling the missing section of the M2 line. The first elements of both shields arrived at the Karolin metro station by special night transport. It is from there that the construction of the underground route towards the Bemowo station will begin. The installation of the shields will be carried out directly in the so-called the starting shaft, i.e. where the tunnel drilling will begin. During the following nights, the TBM shield elements will be transported by special transport to the construction site.

The length of the tunnels of the western section of the second metro line is: 3,202 meters and 3,196 meters. “The TBM shields will therefore have to be placed in 3,800 prefabricated rings, each 1.5 meters long. The drilling is scheduled to start during the summer holidays. The cutting machines will work 24 hours a day from the moment they are launched. The only condition for stopping the work is a problem with the ground or with the machine itself or replacing the cutting blades,” the town hall said.

The TBM shield is fully mechanized, but human presence is required. Its work is supervised by a 12-person crew who work in four shifts. The TBM is driven by 16 pairs of hydraulic cylinders.
