The authorities of the University of Warsaw canceled the lecture “And the walls will run, runa, runa”, which was supposed to take place on Tuesday, January 17 in the auditorium of the old library at Krakowskie Przedmieście. The lecture was to be given by Dr. Hanna Machińska, who was dismissed from the position of Deputy Commissioner for Human Rights in December. The official reason is “technical reasons”.

TVN24 reporter Jan Piotrowski confirmed the cancellation of the lecture in an interview with Doctor Machińska. Machińska was informed that the event would not take place “due to technical reasons”.

The lecture is canceled, the rector is silent

Earlier, the former deputy commissioner admitted in an interview with “Gazeta Wyborcza” that she was surprised by this decision. And she was to find out about the cancellation from one of her professor friends, who called the UW rector’s office to confirm her presence. – The person who deals with this organizationally was also unable to tell me what “technical reasons” it was about. I called twice to the rector prof. Alojzy Nowak, I sent him an SMS, after all we know each other and we communicate. Now I have not received any reply. I was invited to this lecture on October 16, the date was set a few weeks later – Machińska told “Wyborcza”.

Despite everything, on Tuesday at 5 p.m., Dr. Machińska intends to come to the auditorium of the old UW library and apologize to those who will not find out about the cancellation of the lecture.

The rector did not know about the lecture

“Gazeta Wyborcza” learned from the spokesperson of the University of Warsaw, Dr. Anna Modzelewska, “that the rector of the University of Warsaw, Prof. Alojzy Nowak, who was shown on the invitation to the lecture as the inviting person, was not even informed about the plans to organize it.” – Mr. Editor probably also would not like to appear on invitations to various events as an inviter without being informed of this fact – Modzelewska replied to the journalist of “Wyborcza”.

Dr. Machińska’s lecture was organized by Professor Piotr Węgleński, former rector of the University of Warsaw, member of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He, too, is surprised by the decision to cancel the lecture. – Recently, she (Dr. Hanna Machińska – ed.) gained great recognition for her activities on the eastern border of Poland, where she tried to help refugees arriving in Poland. Previous rectors left me full freedom in choosing lecturers. I think that in this situation I will be forced to cancel Professor Adam Rotfeld’s lecture scheduled for February, Węgleński told “Wyborcza”.

Doctor Machińska’s appeal

Hanna Machińska has been the Deputy Ombudsman (RPO) since 2017. Earlier, in the years 1991-2017, she was the director of the Office of the Council of Europe in Warsaw. On December 7, the Ombudsman, Professor Marcin Wiącek relieved doctor Machińska from the duties of his deputy. She was replaced by Wojciech Brzozowski, PhD, head of the Department of Religious Law at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Warsaw.

Machińska has experience and achievements in implementing European legal standards to the Polish legal order, including those concerning the protection of human rights and anti-discrimination law. It is committed to the fight against discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance. She is the author of a number of publications on the protection of human rights. While performing her function in the office of the Commissioner for Human Rights, she was involved, among others, in activities for the rights of migrants, which was particularly visible during the crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border.
