The Dramatic Theater in Warsaw will bear the name of Gustaw Holoubek. At the Thursday session (April 20), on the eve of the 100th birthday of the outstanding actor, the city councilors decided.
As explained in the message, “the city councilors adopted a resolution to change the name and statute of the theater with which Gustaw Holoubek was associated for many years.”
– Gustaw Holoubek – an outstanding actor, director, director, opposition activist, friend, supporter. How many people, so many memories about this unique character. The 100th anniversary of his birth is a great opportunity to remember his great roles and merits for the theater and for Poland. However, let’s not forget that his heart always beat strongly for Warsaw theaters – said Warsaw’s deputy mayor Aldona Machnowska-Góra, quoted in the information.
It was recalled that “one of the greatest Polish actors was born on April 21, 1923 in Krakow, where he lived until the end of the occupation.” “Since graduating from the State School of Dramatic Arts in Kraków in 1947, he has continuously participated in the artistic life of the Polish theater. He has created over three hundred theater, film, television and radio roles” – it was written.
He made his debut in the professional theater with the role of Charys in Odysseus u Freaków at the Stary Theater in Krakow.
He worked successively with the Stary Teatr im. Helena Modjeska, the Silesian Theater in Katowice, the Dramatic Theater in Warsaw, the National Theatre, the Polish Theatre, and the Ateneum Theater in Warsaw. In the years 1959-1963 and 1969-1982 he was a full-time actor of the Dramatic Theatre.
“In 1972, Holoubek took over the directorship of Dramaczny, creating, as reviewers wrote, one of the best theater companies in post-war Poland. During the martial law period, the authorities dismissed Gustaw Holoubek from the position of director, and the leaders of the acting company left the theater in protest” – recalled in sent information.
