The next stage of construction of the connector between the suburban and long-distance cross-city lines is coming to an end. From Monday, SKM and Koleje Mazowieckie trains will run on two tracks again.

“On the Warsaw suburban diameter, from January 9, train traffic will again run on two tracks” – PKP PLK announced in a Thursday communiqué. According to the railwaymen, in relation to the current number of trains, there will be about 300 more connections from Monday.

Construction of a connector between lines

From December 19, a changed traffic organization is in force at the Warsaw railway junction. In the vicinity of the Warszawa Ochota stop, railway workers started construction of a connector between the suburban cross-city line and the long-distance cross-city line. Railway workers explained that the works required the creation of a safety zone, hence the need to shut down one of the two tracks of the suburban line. The contractor will install special “larsen” type walls at the embankment of the cross-city line at the height of the railway viaduct near Warszawa Główna.

In short, the difficulties are due to the fact that four trains in each direction run through the cross-city line every hour. In such a group, there is one SKM train and three Koleje Mazowieckie trains. One way they run every 3-4 minutes for 10 minutes followed by about 50 minutes break. Already on the first day after the introduction of the changed traffic organization, passengers complained about delayed trainsand.

As the railwaymen assure in the press release, the connector under construction will improve the planning and movement of trains during the works carried out at the Warszawa Zachodnia station.

Modernization of Warszawa Zachodnia station

The modernization of the Warszawa Zachodnia station is to be completed this year. It is an investment worth over PLN 2 billion. As part of it, new, additional platforms are being built, and all platforms, including the existing ones, will be roofed. Communication in the area of the station is to be facilitated by a footbridge connecting Wola and Ochota. The underground passage will also undergo a metamorphosis – a fragment of the current passage from the side of Tunelowa Street will be completely dismantled to make it possible to prepare a wider corridor.

The station will also have escalators, elevators, an information system and wide passages to facilitate access to trains. It will be easier to combine rail travel with public transport.
