Archaeological works have begun on the site of the future TR Warszawa headquarters. The city hall announces that the contractor for the investment will be selected next year. The building will be built at the same time as the Museum of Modern Art, but it will not be completed before a few years.
The square where the TR Warszawa building will be built is directly adjacent to the area of the so-called central square. “It can be expected that there will be remains of pre-war Warsaw in this place. It will then be necessary to invite a team of archaeological experts to conduct research,” the Culture Office of the Capital City of Warsaw said in a statement.
Archaeological work is ongoing at the moment
It was emphasized that thanks to the decision to carry out earlier excavation and demolition works, the contractor selected next year will be able to carry out the first stage of construction of the new theater headquarters without any problems. “The time gained is also being used by the design studio, which is currently working on adapting the documentation,” the city hall informed.
The announcement indicated that “the most advantageous offer in the procedure for the implementation of preparatory works was submitted by Warbud SA”. “The implementation of the entire task was divided into three stages. The first stage is underground works. The next ones will include above-ground works and other works, including the construction of the façade” – it was written.
Officials announced that another tender procedure is planned to be announced in the fall.
Construction of the museum nearing completion
The opening of the Museum of Modern Art is scheduled for October 25. The smaller TR Warszawa building will be right next to the museum's headquarters. Initially, it was planned that both buildings would be built at the same time. Ultimately, the investment was divided into two tasks. There was no money for the theater, and there were also complications with the ownership of the plot.
The city announced that the new seat of TR Warszawa would be one of the most modern theatres in Europe. It will primarily house two theatre halls (the larger one with a modular auditorium for up to 700 seats), as well as: educational rooms, rehearsal rooms, an audio studio, a video studio, a spacious foyer, a restaurant and two bars. Unlike its museum neighbour, the theatre's façade will be dark.
The TR Warszawa building, like the MSN, was designed by the New York studio Thomas Phifer and Partners, in collaboration with APA Wojciechowski and Buro Happold.
TR Warszawa is one of the most interesting stages in Warsaw. Its current location is in a tenement house at Marszałkowska 8, but the premises do not belong to the theatre. Besides, it is too small for its needs anyway.
