Warsaw officials have selected the contractor for the design and cost documentation for the reconstruction of the Tęcza cinema. Among the seven offers received, the offer of Biuro Architekt Kaczmarczyk SC from Sucha Beskidzka won the most points.

As we read in the press release of the town hall, the winning company will prepare comprehensive design and cost documentation, which will allow to obtain a building permit and then use the renovated Tęcza cinema. “The design documentation will include the adaptation of the building of the former Tęcza cinema and its interior. In the future, it will serve the Andrzej Wajda Film Culture Center, which will conduct cinema and educational activities there as well as projects promoting cinematography” – inform the officials.

Architect Andrzej Kaczmarczyk has many years of experience in his profession, which he gained not only in Poland, but also abroad – in Vienna. The studio was also invited to create the concept of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw. The documentation contractor was also responsible for the modernization of the cinema and theater hall in the Youth Palace in Katowice. Two of his other projects are also under construction: Bunkier Sztuki, the Gallery of Contemporary Art in Krakow and the Jewish Theater in Warsaw.

About Tęcza cinema

The building of the Tęcza cinema was built in 1929 as a central heating boiler room for the housing estate of the Warsaw Housing Cooperative, which was then under construction. Soon, however, thanks to the modernization of the boilers, it was possible to find a place for a cinema theater, which was missing in the area. The best architects, including Bruno Zborowski and Szymon Syrkus, were responsible for its shape over the years. In 1989, the building became the seat of the Akademia Ruchu artistic collective, with a film programme. Later, from 1997, with short breaks, it stood unused.

In December 2020, Warsaw, the Warsaw Housing Cooperative – Żoliborz Centralny and the Film Culture Center named after Andrzej Wajda have agreed on the further fate of this place – the Tęcza cinema will be renovated and the Wajda Center will organize its seat there.

After the reconstruction at Suzina 6, a fully digital cinema with a room for approx. 200 seats, a Dolby Atmos sound system and a panoramic screen will be built. It will be equipped with equipment for streaming organized events, e.g. on the VOD Warszawa platform. But in Tęcza, you will still be able to watch films from 35 mm film projectors. The building will be adapted to the needs of people with physical disabilities, it will also include an induction loop supporting people, among others with hearing impairments.
