The tunnel under the railway tracks at the Warszawa Wschodnia station is to be ready in six years, the capital city hall has announced. The investment involves the creation of a dual carriageway, pavements, bicycle paths and a tram line.

On Thursday, the town hall announced the signing of a contract between the Capital City Development Board and Torprojekt for the execution of a construction project for a tunnel under the railway tracks along ul. Tysiąclecia and development of the concept of ul. Tysiąclecia from ul. Żupnicza to ul. of Kiev.

Officials indicate that the contract is the implementation of the agreement that the city concluded in 2022 with PKP PLK. They explain that the modernization of the cross-city line and the reconstruction of the Warszawa Wschodnia station is the best time to implement this investment. “The tunnel will be a key element of the communication system of the future East Junction, where railway, tram, bus and metro lines will converge. The vision of the junction is being commissioned by the Public Transport Authority – the development is co-financed by the European Union” – informs the town hall.

According to the concept, the following will be built in the tunnel: a dual carriageway, sidewalks on both sides and bicycle paths. The investment will connect Kijowska and Żupnicza streets. On the western side of the tunnel, closer to the Warszawa Wschodnia station, there is a place for a tram line and stops with entrances to the platforms of suburban railway lines, which is to facilitate transfers.

The concept of development of the Millennium Route

The tunnel under the railway tracks is an element of the new concept of developing the Millennium Route, which will connect Praga Północ and Praga Południe in the future.

“This concept includes, among others: construction of bicycle paths, creation of pedestrian-friendly places, marking out local roads for car traffic and tram routes. A system of related squares and squares, as well as new elements of small architecture, will also be created” – enumerates the capital city town hall. It also indicates that public consultations on the concept of the route took place in 2022.
