On the viaduct during the Aleja of John Paul II there is one of the most loaded sections of the tram network. The track required renovation not only due to the consumption of infrastructure elements, but also the comfort of travel. Work in this place started at the end of March, opening this year's renovation season in the capital.

They covered a total of 1330 meters of single track, they were mainly conducted by the own forces of the Warsaw trams track plant. About 2,300 tons of aggregate were used on the abutment of the viaduct to lay a new track, and about 1200 foundations and 1800 meters of rails were laid along the entire length of the renovated section.

On the viaduct itself, defects in the supporting structure and expansion joints under the track were repaired, and a new waterproofing was also made. In the final stage, new prefabricated slabs were laid – with a total area of about 1200 square meters and a mass of over 500 tons – and about 900 meters of new rails.

New track tests

As the Warsaw trams announce, all the work will be completed this week. Time for welding, building and flooding of laid rails with special resins, as well as paving work at the track and the beginning of playback of greenery around the track. At the weekend, Warsaw trams will test a new track using a diagnostic car and a line tram.

The contractors also used the closing of the route to carry out work on adjacent sections. The track buildings at the Rondo “Radosław” stop were refreshed. Recording works were completed in the area of the Broniewski intersection and Aleja of Jan Paweł II, where the most used fragment of turnouts was replaced. Regeneration of rails on Popiełuszki Street, which covered about 1800 meters of single track (3600 meters of rails), was also possible.

Trams will return to the route connecting Śródmieście with Żoliborz and Bielany on the originally planned date – From Monday, May 26. “A measurable benefit and a noticeable change will be the abolition of speeds of speeds up to 10 and 20 km/h – trams will go with a full speed, permissible by the road manager. The effect of this change will be to shorten the time of trams” – emphasizes tram.

After the resumption of trams movement, paving work at the track will continue. Robots related to the green buildings of the tracks on abutments and reclamation of greenery will end in early autumn – then on the access to the viaduct (on the track made in the classic bedding structure) a green “rug” will appear.

Renovation of the track at Arkadia

Tram route

On Sunday, May 25, a temporary overlay switching at Grunwaldzki Square will be dismantled, thanks to which the trams ran through Broniewskiego Street throughout the renovation. At the same time, the tram will repair the tracks on Nocznickiego Street – at the entrance to the Młociny communication node. Trams will not travel along Broniewskiego, Wólczyńska and Nocznickie Streets between pl. Grunwaldzki and the Młociny node and Fr. Popiełuszki between the roundabout of the Home Army “Radosław” and Słowackiego Street.

On this day, the currently applicable routes of trams 16, 17, 22, 24, 27, 33 and buses Z17 will not change. Tram 73 trams will be suspended, and 26 and 78 will go along the short route to the Piaski loop. The route of the replacement bus line Z33 will extend – buses will go from the Rondo of the AK “Radosław” grouping to Młocin – along W. Reymonta, Wólczyńska and Nocznickie streets.

From Monday, May 26, the lines that ran here earlier will return to the viaduct. And so, trams 16 will return to the Piaski – town of Wilanów; 22 will re -travel the Rondo Wiatraczna – Piaski route; 24 New Bemowo – Gocławek and 27 Metro Marymont – Wolski Cemetery. On its permanent route, between the Górczewska housing estate and the Eastern Station, line 28 will run. “Seventeen” will return to the street of Fr. J. Popiełuszki and Aleja Jana Pawła II, but in Mokotów will commute to the Mokotowskie metro station (at the intersection of Aleja Niepodległości and Rakowiecka the construction of a tram track is underway). For this reason, line 33 will remain on the changed route – trams will go from Młocin to Narutowicza Square.

Trams 73 and 78 as well as replacement buses Z17 and Z33 will stop running.

The tram complementary line 71 will be launched on the route Plac G. Narutowicza – Filterowa – L. Krzywicki – Nowowiejska – Aleja Niepodległości – T. Chałubiński – Aleja Jana Paweł II – priest. J. Popiełuszko – Metro Marymont. The second complementary tram line will be 76 – trams about this issue will replace the “Sixteen” courses on the route Miasteczko Wilanów – Muranowska. Składy 76 will run along the following: Wilanów town – Aleja Rzeczpospolita – Jan III Sobieski – Belvedere – Spacerowa – Goworka – Puławska – Marszałkowska – Banking Square – Avenue of Solidarity – Młynarska – Obozowa – 303 Squadron – Radio – Radio – Silesian Insurgents – Nowe Bemowo.

Further renovations

This year's renovation plan includes 34 tasks and repair or replacement of nearly 10 kilometers of single track. A large part of the renovations will be carried out during the holiday season when the traffic is smaller. Due to the large tasks to perform, Warsaw trams use the entire construction and renovation season – from March to October. Spreading work is necessary – so as not to close parallel communication routes at one time.

Thanks to the current work on the viaduct during the Aleja Jana Pawła II, it will be possible to communicate other routes during the next repairs and investments – both in terms of trips from the depot, tram lines detours, as well as the possibility of providing replacement bus communication and minimizing traffic problems.

After the works are completed at the interface between Śródmieście and Żoliborz, renovation at pl. Banking, where the entire turnout will be replaced in several stages. This is the first big repair in this place in 16 years.
