Warsaw is testing software useful for repairing cavities in roadways and damaged signs. Road workers hope that in the future the tool will help them detect illegal advertisements or plan repairs.

At the end of April, a gray Hyundai appeared on the streets of the capital, resembling the cars of the Municipal Roads Authority to scan the registration numbers of cars parked in the paid zone. However, the task of this vehicle was not to track down dishonest drivers, but to scan 115 sections of 93 streets. The road ambulance workers will now use the collected data.

The camera placed on the Hyundai’s roof captured the entire image of the streets in 3D, taking pictures every five meters. According to the ZDM announcement, the “street view” expected by road workers has just been transferred to a special browser. After its launch, a map of Warsaw is displayed with scanned street sections marked. They are marked with two colors. The color of green – streets photographed a month ago. In turn, the sections marked in red were scanned in 2013, and their image was additionally made available to compare the changes that took place over the course of 9 years.

Map, street view and 3D field

The viewer image is divided into three parts: map, street view, and 3D box. “The street view is seemingly a classic street view. It shows a scanned road with the places where the camera took photos marked in green. The cursor is a green shield, which appears when you click on a given object in a road lane, such as a street lamp or a curb. After hovering over this object, the shield sticks to it, partially assuming its shape. This is important because it allows for accurate measurements of the height and verticality of, for example, a lighting pole. If it is skewed, the cursor shows it to us “- explains ZDM.

As the road workers explain further in the message, after clicking, for example, on a post blocking the entrance, a command box appears, prompting the user what to do. You can indicate the location, give the distance from the scan site to the bar, mark the surface, measure the height or make a perpendicular measurement.

“For a thorough check of the place, the third field – 3D is useful. It is a three-dimensional image in a 360-degree perspective. The 3D field allows, for example, to locate inclined parts of the road or collapsed manholes. water can collect, so where should the road profile be improved in the future “- reports ZDM.

The tested tool will improve the performance of road workers

Scanned objects – damaged street lamps or posts blocking the passage are marked with short notes. Thanks to them, the road ambulance workers are able to quickly collect basic information about defective objects only on the basis of the map (without turning on the street view). It is similar with the road cavities. Each chipping has a specified depth and width. Road engineers indicate that this will make it easier to calculate the weight needed to patch holes and, consequently, improve their operation in the field.

The software provided by the Elbląg-based company OPEGIEKA is initially to be used only to detect defects in the road and damage to vertical markings. “Only in the longer term, if the mobile road scanning technology passes the test in this regard, we plan to expand the range of objects under analysis with other types of road safety marking and devices – road markings, segment fences, blocking posts” – enumerates ZDM.

Road workers hope that in the future the tool will allow for measuring the area of ​​road activities, detecting illegally mounted advertisements, quickly determining the boundaries of a road lane, conducting an inventory of foreign devices located in the road lane, as well as planning future repairs. The tests will last until November.
