The specter of digging up the central section of Aleje Jerozolimskie hangs over Warsaw. Railway workers must thoroughly renovate the tunnel and tracks, which will involve a complete closure of the downtown artery to traffic. – There will be a huge gorge between Zawiszy Square and Powiśle – announces the mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski, graphically. It is not certain when the work will begin, but officials are preparing for it in detail.

Rafał Trzaskowski’s first term as president of Warsaw is coming to an end. One of the politician’s flagship promises were changes in the center. Aleje Jerozolimskie is a break in the conceptand the obstacle to their civilization is the renovation of the cross-town railway line, which has been planned for years.

The major modernization of the busiest railway route in Poland will be carried out using the open-pit method, which means that Aleje Jerozolimskie will be dug up and will even cease to exist as a road. They will be a huge pitfall. – When it comes to the renovation of the cross-city line, the dates were constantly changing. We have a new government that is analyzing it, but I cannot imagine it abandoning this work, said the mayor of Warsaw during Wednesday’s meeting with journalists.

And his deputy, Michał Olszewski, revealed that the city hall team has already had the first talks with Piotr Małolepszak, undersecretary of state at the Ministry of Infrastructure, who is responsible for rail transport. – The designer who works for PKP PLK had rather limited contact with us, mainly because there is a problem with staffing. We are waiting for PKP PLK’s decisions regarding the future of this investment, said Vice-President Olszewski. He also made no secret of the fact that everyone was waiting for the expected “personal changes in railway companies.”

He assured that the town hall was thoroughly preparing the city for the works that would begin sooner or later. – Today, PKP PLK is throwing all its efforts at the eastern section: from the Vistula to the Eastern Railway Station. We coordinate very extensively on this section, including with the construction of the third metro line (connecting points are the existing Warszawa Stadion station and planned Warsaw East – ed.). On the central section, i.e. from the Vistula River to the Central Railway Station, we are carrying out an inventory of engineering facilities located along this entire route – he informed. He added that coordination of work is “extremely important”.

As he assessed, 2025 as the year of commencement of work is completely unrealistic. – Originally, we expected that PKP PLK would submit an application for a decision on the location of the railway line a year and a half ago. To this day, no such application has been received – Michał Olszewski left no doubts.

They are planning a link, there will be a competition for the “frying pan”.

All points where railway infrastructure meets urban infrastructure need to be considered. An important issue will be the proper connection of the new station, which will be built near de Gaulle roundabout, with public transport stops. The side effect of this surgery will be relocating Palma to a plot closer to Smolna.

An underground facility is also to be built a connector between the PKP Śródmieście and M1 Centrum platforms. – The connector is absolutely coordinated, we have actually already completed this work. The elevations of our project are adapted to the railway workers’ design, we do not have a turnout in this area – assured Vice-President Olszewski. He stipulated that the urban part of the connector would be built only when the railway workers finished their work (at best, when they were heading towards the end).

Before the comprehensive modernization of the cross-city line, there is not the slightest chance of changes to the so-called frying pan in front of the Centrum metro station. The appearance of this square will be the subject of an architectural competition, which has already been prepared.
