Firefighters calculate drivers' errors after a truck fire in the southern tunnel of the Warsaw beltway. Their observations show that many forgot about the creation of the corridor of life, others ignored the red light and entered the tunnel despite the ban. There were also those who turned back and tried to go against the tide. “This behavior hinders access and action to rescue services and unnecessarily poses an additional threat,” notes the Warsaw fire brigade.

The fire in the southern tunnel of the Warsaw beltway took place on Wednesday evening. The fire took the truck cabin. The car was on the road near the tunnel outlet towards Poznań. On the recording, which we received on Kontakt24, we see that the driver managed to go to the emergency lane. Firefighters said that he left the burning vehicle on their own and did not require medical assistance. At the time of firefighting, both tunnel threads were closed. About an hour took firefighters to extinguish the fire and smoke the tunnel. Then the road workers checked his technical condition and restored traffic.

Danger behavior of drivers in the tunnel

Firefighters reported in social media that during the firefighting operation not all drivers behaved according to the rules. They also published photos from monitoring cameras in the tunnel that road workers made available to them.

“We are returning to Wednesday's fire for a moment, presenting photos showing the extremely irresponsible behavior of some drivers during this event. The biggest mistakes made by drivers are the lack of a created corridor of life, entering the tunnel despite the red lights, and turning back in the tunnel and driving against the current” – pointed out the young Brig. MichaÅ‚ Konopka from the Municipal Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Warsaw in a Facebook post.

He emphasized that such behavior hinders access and action to rescue services and unnecessarily poses an additional threat to other road users.

What if a fire breaks out in the tunnel?

How should we behave when a fire breaks out in the tunnel? The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways explains this in the instructional film, published last week in social media.

If the car we move on, we should go down to the alarm niche or to the emergency belt. We turn on the emergency lights, turn off the engine, leave the keys in the ignition and lower the car. There are SOS phones in the alarm niche. Through them, you should call for help so that the GDDKiA operator can quickly locate the scene. Road workers advise you to try to put out the fire with fire extinguishers placed in alarm niches. When this is not possible, leave the tunnel as soon as possible through the next evacuation output.

The second of the situation presented on the recording is a fire of the car preceding us. What if we can't safely miss it and leave the tunnel? Road workers recommend to stop and remember to create a life corridor. Turn off the engine, leave the key in the ignition and leave the vehicle. Then we should leave the tunnel as soon as possible through the next evacuation output. If a large smoke appeared in the tunnel at that time, you should stick to the earth as low as possible, because the higher, the more smoke in the air.
