PiS should take responsibility for these celebrations. Only it should have done it months ago, and not several dozen hours before the Independence Day – said the Mayor of Warsaw Rafał Trzaskowski on Tuesday, referring to the organization of the Independence March as a state event.

– The rulers decided to take full responsibility for safety on the streets of Warsaw. It is true that they did it in a manner inconsistent with the procedure, because such applications should reach us many days, months ago – said the Mayor of Warsaw Rafał Trzaskowski during the Tuesday briefing. As he assessed, the decision to organize the march as a state event, made several dozen hours earlier, endangered the safety of “Warsaw residents, all those who want to take part in a common national holiday”. – Full responsibility rests on the shoulders of the rulers – repeated Trzaskowski many times.

Trzaskowski: there is no place for nationalist slogans on the streets of Warsaw

The president of the capital also emphasized that there is no place for nationalist slogans on the streets of Warsaw. – There is no place for people who approve of a totalitarian system, there is no place for slogans that are basically fascist slogans. Warsaw is too heavily marked with the blood of those who fought against fascism and struggled with all sorts of national tendencies, he said. He also added that the city wants to put pressure on the rulers not to – as he said – give responsibility for organizing national holidays to “people who do not respect the insurgents, our common national symbols or the symbol of Fighting Poland”.

– I just spoke to the chief police officer. We care very much about safety, because at the moment the responsibility for what will happen on the streets of Warsaw rests on the shoulders of the government and the police. We cooperate with the police – assured the president. And he noted that the city was removing building materials so that they would not be used by “extreme elements participating in the demonstration”. He appealed to all participants of the march to “behave with dignity as befits the anniversary of Independence Day.”

When asked how he assessed the fact that the state office takes patronage over the march, he replied: – It looks a bit as if Bąkiewicz became a member of the government. I am saying for many weeks that it is the state, the PiS government, that should take responsibility for these ceremonies. Only he should have done it months ago.

PiS: The Independence March will have a state character

Earlier in the Sejm, at a press conference, PiS spokeswoman Anna Czerwińska announced that the Independence March would be of a state nature. – We appeal for a dignified passage of the Independence March, which does not lose its social character, because it has been so from the very beginning, for many years. We know that many people from all over Poland are going, and in the spirit of responsibility – because these people would come anyway – the march will be of a state nature. There will be an organization and it will be secured – she said.

The announcement on the march was issued on Tuesday morning by the Office for Veterans and Victims of Oppression. Jan Józef Kasprzyk, head of the Office for Veterans and Victims of Oppression, informed there that he had made a decision to give the ceremony a formal status “pursuant to Article 2 (1) of the Law on Assemblies”. According to the announcement, the ceremony will start “in accordance with the original will of the social organizers of the event at 1.00 p.m. at the Roman Dmowski roundabout”. Participants will also follow the “traditional route of the march”. The security of the participants is to be ensured by the police and the Military Police.
