The Warsaw Police Headquarters received two three-year-old geldings. The first of them – Moradez – is a representative of the Polish sports horse breed. The second one – Resko – is a horse of the Silesian breed. The purchase of one of the animals was financed from the budget of the capital city of Warsaw, which supports the police, among other things, in maintaining service horses and purchasing the necessary equipment.
Currently, the Intelligence and Patrol Department of the KSP employs 16 horses with a second-degree certificate and two new horses, Moradez and Resko, which are just starting training to obtain a first-degree certificate.
Police horses undergo special training. In order for them to work among people, they must prove that they will not pose a threat to other people. For this purpose, they undergo training (lasting about a year) in a police unit, after which they receive first-degree attestation. Then the horses can serve in places with little traffic.
“Such a horse can patrol green areas, but cannot participate in activities involving high risk, e.g. during securing mass events. For this, a second-level certificate is needed. The animals will have to wait at least half a year for the next examination,” she explained. police in a statement.
Horses help patrol difficult-to-reach areas
Police horses require specialized care, including appropriate nutrition, training, veterinary care and living conditions.
The officers noted that horses in the police perform many important tasks. Thanks to their presence, they enable: patrolling hard-to-reach areas – parks, forests or recreational areas where other vehicles have limited access; maintaining order during mass events – the presence of riders on horses has a preventive effect, and if necessary, horses facilitate quick action in the crowd; preventive and representative activities – police horses command respect, but also arouse sympathy among residents, which helps build a positive image of the police.
“Because animals are highly visible and versatile, they play a key role in improving public safety,” the police emphasized.
The history of horse service in the Polish police
Horses served in the Polish police already in the interwar period. The first Mounted Squadron of the State Police was established in Łódź; in 1920, 90 officers served in it. Currently, they are used mainly for patrol duty, as well as for activities related to ensuring and restoring violated public order during mass events and gatherings.
In 1936, a significant change took place in the State Mounted Police – the Mounted Division of the State Police was established, which included five squadrons, numbering on average about 100 policemen. Squadrons 1 and 2 were stationed in Warsaw, 3 and 4 in Kamionka Strumiłowa (Tarnopol Voivodeship), and 5 in Roj. This structure of the Division was maintained until the outbreak of World War II.
After the war, the horses returned to service in 1972. A Mounted Platoon was then established, which was part of the organizational structures of the Motorized Unit of the Capital Headquarters of the Citizens' Militia. 22 horses served there.
The following horse breeds are used in the police: Silesian horse, Polish half-breed horse (currently Polish sports horse), Greater Poland horse, Lesser Poland horse, German sports horse and Holstein horse.
