About 45 million cars in less than two years. This is how many drivers used the Warsaw Southern Bypass tunnel near Ursynów. This is an extremely safe route – says the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways.
Małgorzata Tarnowska, spokeswoman for the Warsaw branch of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways, provided PAP with data on the stream of cars that passed through the tunnel of the Southern Bypass of Warsaw. – Since its opening, i.e. since December 2021, approximately 45 million vehicles have passed through the tunnel in both directions – said Małgorzata Tarnowska, spokeswoman for the Warsaw branch of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways.
According to GDDKiA data, last year over 25 million cars passed through the tunnel, of which almost 13 million towards Poznań and over 12.1 million towards Terespol.
In turn, from the beginning of this year to the end of August, over 19.7 million drivers used the tunnel. Over 10.3 million went towards Poznań, and over 9.4 million towards Terespol.
– It is also a safe route, as evidenced by the lack of accidents – added the spokeswoman of the Warsaw branch of GDDKiA.
“The S2 expressway has improved departure from the capital”
On December 22, 2021, drivers entered for the first time the approximately 14-kilometer section of the S2 expressway between the Warszawa Wilanów and Lubelska junctions. A year later, another approximately 4.5 kilometers of S2 with a tunnel under Ursynów were opened to traffic. – The S2 expressway has improved the exit from the capital towards Siedlce and Lublin, and also connected the A2 motorway on the western and eastern sides of Warsaw – noted Tarnowska.
The construction of the S2 expressway on the Puławska – Lubelska section was co-financed by the European Union from the Cohesion Fund under the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Program for 2014-2020. The amount of EU funding for three implementation sections with a total length of 18.6 kilometers was approximately PLN 1.7 billion.
