The main idea of the action: “Wielka restores memory” is to remind the history of the demolished building. This year, the project will be enriched with a new element.

On April 19, on the 80th anniversary of the burning of the Great Synagogue, residents will be able to see what the building used to look like. He will return there for the third time. It will be digitally reconstructed and shown on the facade of the Blue Skyscraper at Plac Bankowy.

The project is about the symbolic “rebuilding” of the Great Synagogue, demolished by the Germans after the fall of the uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto. Its former site, i.e. Tłomackie 7, is now occupied by the base of a glass skyscraper at Plac Bankowy 2. It is on its wall that the image of the demolished Great Synagogue will be displayed, which will then be animated so that the viewer has the impression that the building is rising from the ruins. Thanks to the use of virtual multimedia animation techniques, in the culminating moment of the projection on the wall of the skyscraper, it will show the image of the Great Synagogue from its glory days. The projection will be accompanied by a sound collage. As stated, from the archival recording we will hear the song of the cantor of this synagogue, Gerszon Sirota, who died in the Warsaw ghetto, and fragments of Bashert’s poem will be read by the author, Irena Klepfisz, daughter of Michał – a member of the Bund and a ŻOB soldier.

The main idea of the project is to remind the history of the place and the inhabitants of the city who used the Great Synagogue from 1878. The house of prayer ceased to exist on May 16, 1943. The blowing up of the synagogue, at the end of the pacification of the ghetto uprising, was an eruption of hatred, it was supposed to mean “the end of the Jewish district in Warsaw”. As the organizers explain, the symbolic return of the Great Synagogue, on which a large inscription ליבע (love) appears during the projection, contradicts the “triumph of the Nazis”.

“Don’t be indifferent” with the message of the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. They celebrate it with almost a hundred events.
