This year, no fire was ignited on the Warsaw Uprising Mound, which was lit here every year on August 1 for 63 days. Officially, the reason is the revitalization of the park under the mound, but the works have not started yet. Not even their contractor was selected.
Every year, lighting a fire on the mound was one of the most poignant points of the celebration of the anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising on August 1. The fire commemorating the insurgents burned in Czerniaków for 63 days, as long as the uprising lasted. The reader pointed out that this year the candle is not burning, although no maintenance or renovation works are underway there.
First, cutting down the trees
As Anna Stopińska, a spokeswoman for the Board of Greenery, explains, the decision is related to the revitalization of the “Burza” Action Park, because this is the official name of the green area under the mound. But the works have not even started, indeed, the tender for the contractor has not even been settled. The last information on the procedure announced in May concerns the submitted offers. Five companies are competing for the contract, and the proposed prices range from PLN 24 to 48 million. We will probably know the winning offer within three weeks. So construction works cannot be an obstacle because they are not going on, so what is it? According to Stopińska, “preparatory work”.
– Based on the results of a detailed dendrological inventory of the park’s stand, in July, the Greenery Board removed 62 trees. Due to their poor phytosanitary condition, these trees were a threat to the life and property of the inhabitants. Their removal was approved by the Marshal of the Masovian Voivodeship. It is worth adding that the vast majority of trees were self-seeding of invasive alien species – he replies. And he adds that the Board of Greenery is waiting for the marshal’s next decisions regarding cutting. Because the condition of these trees is supposed to pose a threat to the inhabitants. – These trees are located near the pedestrian routes and intensively used spaces – explains Anna Stopińska.
How waiting for the marshal’s decision makes it impossible to light a fire on the mound, he does not specify. But he ensures that the annual tradition was continued, which is confirmed by the spokeswoman of the Mokotów district office. – This year there was no celebration on the mound, but the fire brought in the relay race of generations from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier ignited elsewhere – in Park Dreszera. The celebrations were also held there. The Warsaw Uprising Mound, on the other hand, gained light illumination – tells us Monika Chrobak.
Changes on the mound and in the park
Big changes are awaiting the Warsaw Uprising Mound. A two-level observation deck will be built on the top, where there is a 15-meter sign of Fighting Poland. The insurgent anchor will gain a new pedestal. The stairs leading to the top will be renovated, and the main entrance to the park from Bartycka Street will be redeveloped – there will be a historical exhibition and a lapidarium from fragments of demolished Warsaw (the mound was made of post-war debris).
The park will also feature thematic paths (historical and nature trails), recreational zones with new street furniture, including a playground, and a space for dogs. There are also footbridges that will allow you to almost enter the tree crowns. The project also includes new plantings, including 450 young trees, as well as shrubs and perennials.
