Warsaw trams have signed a contract for the implementation of project documentation for a thorough reconstruction of Washington Avenue. In the first stage, the contractor will propose six different variants of the communication system. The project preparation process is to last three years.
Established in the 1940s, the Washington Avenue system stands out from modern safety standards and travel comfort. The track is very close to the road, pedestrians have four lanes to cover, not separated by the island.
Last year, a point renovation of fragments of this thoroughfare was carried out, which were in the worst condition – including intersections with ul. International and cinema. “On other sections you will need a comprehensive modernization and adaptation of the infrastructure to the current standards and building regulations, including the preservation of the appropriate road gauge” – indicated officials.
Six route variants
Databout will take care of the project of the new track. The contract amounts to PLN 3.6 million gross. Designers are designed to prepare documentation of the whole, over a two -kilometer section of the track – between Washington roundabout and Wiatracza roundabout.

Priority: save trees
The priority – as the town hall emphasized – is to protect the existing rows of trees located on both sides of al. Washington. In 2023, Warsaw trams ordered the expertise of trees to be carried out along with the determination of root systems and development of their care plan. “Recommendations for this expertise will be taken into account at every stage of the project” – noted in the announcement.
As we reported on tvnwarszawa.pl, the trams of Warsaw presented a project of a thorough reconstruction of the street, not just tracks in 2022. The changes were to improve pedestrian safety and fit the bicycle path. But this would be associated with a limitation of the number of belts, against which councilors protested, scaring the paralysis of the district. The second variant of the tram drivers assumed leaving the existing road width (2×2), but would mean cutting out several hundred trees.
Coordination with other investments
Design works will last three years. At this time, the contractor must obtain all necessary arrangements, the decision on environmental conditions, water law consent and final building permit.
“Reconstruction of the route at Alevgton Aleja will be possible in 2028-30. This term depends on securing appropriate financial resources and coordination with other investments planned in this area” – said the town hall. The reconstruction of the cross -city line planned by PKP PLK was indicated, which is still postponed.
“The designed solutions will enable the implementation of the tram route to Gocław, for which construction projects have already been created. In the near future key decisions should also be expected for this investment,” the town hall said.
In addition, the reconstruction of the tram route in Aleja Washington is to be coordinated by the design of the third metro line from the National Stadium to Gocław. Both investments converge in the area of Ronda Wiatracza.
